About the role

Company Overview:

Relativity is the first and only company to automate aerospace manufacturing by integrating intelligent robotics, software, and proprietary metal 3D printing technology. Disrupting 60 years of aerospace, Relativity offers a radically simplified supply chain, building a rocket with 100x fewer parts in less than 60 days. Our long-term goal is to upgrade humanity’s industrial base on Earth and on Mars.

Team:

The Product Development team at Relativity Space is responsible for the integrated stages and vehicles throughout the life cycle of the rocket. On this team, you will work with every function of the company that helps design, build, test, and fly the Terran R launch vehicle. We are experts in doing things for the first time, tackling the tough integrated problems, and finding the right balance of planning, rigor, and speed to get to a successful flight as fast as possible.

What you’ll do:

In this role, you will act as the engineering focal for the vehicle: solving problems in the build, coordinating planning, and setting engineering definition for operations, and helping to troubleshoot and solve cross functional problems so we can get into test, learn what we need to and go fly. You will work with hardware owners in every discipline to participate in subsystem design, ensure smooth integration and plan vehicle testing. You will identify and drive vehicle trades to decisions, and you will help build the resulting hardware. You will be the main point of contact between the design engineering team and the manufacturing, test, and operations teams for the vehicle.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables:

  • Surface vehicle decisions and trades and drive them to decisions
  • Review vehicle risks and issue ticket closure for cross subsystem impacts, or downstream operational impacts
  • Coordinate and deliver engineering content for pre ship reviews, pre-test reviews and pre-flight reviews
  • Determine vehicle build, test, and fly CONOPs and establish checkouts and success criteria prior to major ops
  • Author and support major vehicle ops test plans
  • Coordinate vehicle operational limits for test and flight
  • Support vehicle integrated checkouts, hot fire testing and flight

What you need to know:

  • Commitment and drive to get this vehicle ready to fly
  • Demonstrated experience summarizing and communicating complex technical information to a wide audience
  • Technical depth in at least one of the key disciplines on the vehicle: structures, fluid systems, propulsion, or avionics
  • The ability to learn quickly on the job

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Test or operational experience with a complex system including mechanical hardware, electronics, and software
  • Experience with data acquisition, controls, or other hardware / software systems
  • Experience leading a multidisciplinary project (college design teams count!)
  • Project management experience
