ABOUT OUR DISTRICT: 

The Syracuse City School District is embarking on a new phase of innovation and transformation with the goal of ensuring that all students graduate high school equipped with the skills needed for college and career readiness. For Syracuse, "all means all" – including students who may fall behind academically or are considered "hard to support" for various reasons. The School Board and Syracuse community have tasked the Superintendent with improving student achievement, and he is seeking a dedicated and diverse team of school leaders and teachers to partner with him in achieving the district's goals. The Syracuse City School District encompasses 34 schools and 4 alternative education programs, serving over 19,000 students from Pre-K to 12th grade. Of these students, 77% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, 18% are served by the Office of Special Education, and 78% are students of color.

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

The Syracuse Rising Teachers program is designed for individuals who hold an associate degree and are interested in earning a Bachelor's Degree and certification in B-12 Special Education. During this 2-year program, participants will work as teaching assistants or long-term substitutes while earning their degree through a residency program tailored for working adults ready to take the next step in their careers.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:

• Earn your Bachelor's Degree through Mercy University in partnership with SCSD and Bloom Board Inc.
• Receive compensation and benefits as a full-time SCSD employee while participating in the program.
• Benefit from significantly offset degree costs, with most participants paying between $0-$7,500 per year depending on financial aid.
• Secure a full-time teaching position upon program completion.
• Commit to working in SCSD for a minimum of 5 years after degree completion.

TEACHING ASSISTANT POSITION HOURS:

40 hours per week, 10 months per year

CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTS:

• New York State Level I, Level II, Level III, Pre-Professional, or Continuing teaching assistant certificate, or willingness to attain certification.
• Successful candidates will be required to pass a fingerprint-based background check, costing $102.50 to the candidate.

SALARY/SALARY RANGE:

• The current new hire salary for SCSD Teaching Assistants is $29,143 per the Unit 8 contractual agreement.
• Long-term substitutes will earn $53,000 per year.
