All About You

The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs/Chief Wellness Officer for Undergraduate Medical Education will be a faculty member with an exemplary reputation as an academic leader in medical education and medical education administration. This position will report to the Associate Dean of Student Affairs and be a member of the medical school leadership team.

The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs will support students throughout their medical education, providing and referring to student-centered services in the core functions of advocacy, counseling, student support, student services, and student remediation planning and support, while collaborating with faculty and staff in the development and education of future physicians. The Assistant Dean functions as a primary student advocate in responding directly to the student needs in providing resources to assist them during their education. They will facilitate access to counseling resources for personal and academic well-being, and overall student success. The Assistant Dean will work independently to prioritize assignments and strategies to achieve the mission of the School of Medicine under the direct supervision and vision of the Associate Dean for Student Affairs.

The selected candidate is expected to advance appropriately through the faculty ranks by their scholarly activities, teaching, university and public service.

Job Duties

  • Work collaboratively with deans’ staff, faculty, and the student body to implement a strategy that maintains and identifies opportunities to improve, when needed, the overall health and wellbeing of students
  • Develop programming addressing mental health and wellbeing for medical students
  • Promote organizational efforts to build a more constructive culture for health professionals and learners
  • Serve as an effective partner to SOM leadership that acknowledges the needs and constraints of the academic missions, while serving as an advocate for student wellbeing
  • Coordinate a bi-annual global assessment of student mental health and wellbeing
  • Advocate for necessary resources to improve student wellbeing and mental health
  • Develop a portfolio of resources individual students can use to cultivate personal wellbeing
  • Provide oversight of a safety net for medical students in distress
  • Provide ex-officio representation of the Office of Student Affairs for key medical school committees (e.g. curriculum committee, Student Progress Committee)
  • Provide mental health and wellness support for the remediation programs for students with sanctions from the Student Progress Committee or Professionalism Honor Board
  • Assist students with residency applications, preparation for interviews, and participation in and oversight of the various residency matching services
  • In coordination with other Deans in Student Affairs, prepare the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE) to accompany students’ residency applications
  • Direct students to resources, policies and procedures related to ADA, and Title IX issues and provides guidance to students as needed
  • Serve as liaison and communicate student related concerns to the appropriate administrative officers of the School of Medicine, hospitals, and community organizations
  • Assist in the development of medical school policy, in particular policy that impacts wellbeing of medical students
  • Adherence to all LCME standards that relate to medical students. These include student services (academic and career counseling and health services and personal counseling)
  • Assistance in preparation, submission, and response to LCME as needed. This includes institutional readiness, assisting with the creation of the LCME database, and with the LCME site visit
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Dean of Student Affairs
