As a surveyor assistant, operates various survey instruments and takes measurements to ensure that land, construction, water, and drainage surveys are completed in an accurate and timely manner.


Job Description
 

Overview

The Surveyor Assistant supports, assists, and participates in the professional surveying work for the City and Dallas Water Utility. Facilitates Surveyor success, performs surveying work, creates and researches documents, and provides any other assistance.

Essential Functions

1 Assists, supports, and helps the Survey Crew Chief in gathering data, operating equipment, reading maps, checking field notes, and maintaining survey equipment.; researches historical surveying and engineering records and provides help and assistance with questions or concerns that require investigation arise.

2 Coordinates, collaborates, and communicates with other survey staff regarding projects and survey related work; provides a second level of review for data and information submitted through survey work.

3 Checks that Plats and Field Notes are accurate and compliant with regulation agencies and standards; measures angles and distances, calculates depths and dimensions, and assists staff with sketches and maps.

4 Assists in the preparation and review of field survey data setup and reduction, property records research and compilation, boundary resolution; produces and develops drawings and descriptions for boundary-descriptive documents, property line resolutions, easements, plat and condemnation plat documents, and metes and bounds.

5 Provides general, clerical, and administrative assistance to Crew Chief and other licensed staff; solves complex mathematical equations, interprets land laws and statutes, and reviews work done in for the Dallas Water Utility.

6 Locates, finds, and identifies underground utilities by using probe or pipe and cable locator; sets points in the form of hubs, stakes, spikes, and rods; maintains, cleans, and secures survey equipment to ensure proper care; enters data collected into the data base or geographic information system.

7 Provides GPS data for various survey projects across the City; compiles data and ensures input in to various systems for use in completing survey work.

8 Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

1 Knowledge of survey equipment, bearings, angles, maps, and grades.

2 Knowledge of surveying work relating to water utility infrastructure.

3 Knowledge and application of laws related to land boundary construction and land use.

4 Ability to perform advanced mathematics

5 Ability to read maps and accurately measure distances.

6 Ability to research and investigate land and boundaries.

7 Ability to communicate and understand technical standards and principles.

8 Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

9 Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • High school diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE:

  • One (1) year experience in public land surveying which involved operating total stations, data collectors, levels and level rods.

EQUIVALENCY(IES):

  • An associate's degree or higher in a math, surveying, engineering technology or Geographic Information Science (GIS) field will meet the education and experience requirements. 

LICENSE(S) and/or CERTIFICATION(S):

  • Valid driver's license and good driving record.
