Who we’re looking for: 

The UW Medicine - Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Phlebotomist with the Phlebotomy & Specimen Processing Services Team at Harborview Medical Center 

 

As a phlebotomist, you will serve our patient community directly by performing blood draws and providing instruction on proper collection of urine specimens. Additionally, you will support students and new employees by providing orientation and training, in addition to other duties outlined below.  

 

Work schedule: 

  • Intermittent. 

  • Schedule is as needed.

  • Day shift. 

 

What you’ll contribute: 

Phlebotomy Duties:  

  • Prepare patient and collection equipment according to established procedures for blood collection.  

  • Utilize resources such as Online Testing Guide (OLTG) for proper collection, handling, and specimen integrity. 

  • Verify patient identity before performing blood collection by following Specimen Collection procedure. 

  • Perform phlebotomy on both inpatients and outpatients, regardless of age.  

  • Instruct patients on proper collection of urine and stool specimens.   

  • Responsible for ensuring the integrity of the collected sample. 

 

General Duties: 

  • Reviewing and releasing laboratory orders in the electronic medical record. 

  • Perform all associated duties related to preparing for phlebotomy collection. 

  • Perform duties associated with outpatient blood draw operations, including completing opening and closing checklists as assigned. 

  • Prioritize tasks to work effectively in a fast-paced clinical environment. 

  • Rotate through phlebotomy bench assignments as scheduled or directed to support laboratory workflow and coverage. 

  • Communicate clearly, directly and on a timely basis. 

  • Maintain complete, accurate and legible records. 

  • Clean work area at least once each shift. 

  • Assist in orientation, training and support of new employees and students. 

  • Attend division and department staff meetings. 

  • Participates in performance improvement activities and supports the hospital in meeting JCAHO, CLIA, and CAP accreditation standards.
