Senior Research Associate

Target salary range: $75-$77K. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.

Objective:

Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) is looking for a Senior Research Associate with expertise in collection, analysis, and processing of observational hailstone data, including the hailstones themselves. Ideally this expertise will take the form of previous experience with cross-sectioning hailstones as well as layer-based isotopic and non-soluble particle analyses. Proficiency with instrumentation is also a plus. As a new member of Janus AER’s globally recognized Research and Development division, you will be able to take advantage of opportunities for collaboration across our established research programs, including:

• Understanding of convective processes and exploration of microphysical impacts
• Photochemical and Lagrangian modeling of the sources and sinks of air pollutants
• The application of active and passive remote sensing to the monitoring of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants
• Detailed validation of cloud, precipitation, and radiative transfer processes using remotely sensed data
• Global Navigation Satellite System Radio Occultation (GNSS-RO) retrievals of temperature, water vapor, and cloud properties

In addition, you will be provided both individual and team mentorship to develop your own externally funded research program. The ideal candidate will publish high impact peer-reviewed papers, give presentations at scientific conferences, write proposals and reports, and keep up with relevant scientific, computing, and observational advances.

Job Description:

• Contribute to the ICECHIP (In-situ Collaborative Experiment for the Collection of Hail in the Plains) field campaign and ongoing related convective research through independent completion of both externally and self-directed research tasks.
• Show adaptability in performing research tasks outside their immediate research area as needed with minimal spin-up time.
• Regularly develop innovative techniques to apply ICECHIP observations to answer scientific questions.
• Expand existing research interests and capabilities beyond ICECHIP’s immediate goals.
• Contribute to studies of aerosol formation, transport, and deposition and their impacts on clouds.
• Develop their own externally funded research program through research grant proposals and contracts with non-profit and industry clients.

Employment Status:

Full-time (40 hours per week). Salaried. Exempt.

Qualifications:

• Ph.D. in atmospheric science or related fields.
• Direct experience in hailstone collection and analysis. Experience in graduate school will be evaluated if it was the major focus of the candidate’s dissertation.
• Excellent programming skills in Fortran, Python, and/or other common languages.
• Skilled in scientific communication, including writing and public speaking.
• Works well independently and in a diverse team.
• Strong leadership and people skills.
• Able to handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
• Comfortable with travel.

Work Environment:

This position will partially consist of laboratory work at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, located in Boulder, CO. Qualified candidates should be local to Boulder, CO for at least 50% of the year.
