Job Description:

The Nebraska Department of Transportation is now hiring summer temporary maintenance workers! Whether you’re looking for temporary work for extra income through the summer months or looking to test out a new position prior to making a long-term commitment, we encourage you to apply! Pay rate of $19.120 per hour to start.

Locations hiring: Kimball, Sidney, Chappell, Gering, Bridgeport, Alliance, Crawford, Chadron, and Gordon. Summer positions, temporary, until November 30, 2024. Hours may depend on the weather, may be more or less than 40 hours per week.

Job Duties:

Mow and trim Right of Way. Spread and tamp surfacing materials. Assist in repairing highway signs. Manually provide highway traffic control for maintenance projects according to safety procedures. Safely remove objects from roadway. Assist in cleaning of all maintenance equipment and buildings. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

Highway Maintenance Worker/ Senior: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license, and possession of a Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required within 60 days of employment.

Highway Maintenance Worker: Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid driver’s license.

PREFERRED: A valid Class A or B Commercial driver's license. Experience in the operation of heavy equipment. 

OTHER: May require out of town, overnight travel. Regular and reliable attendance is also required.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Must be able to safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend or stoop; work in outdoor temperature extremes and work around high speed traffic. Must be able to be reached to report to work outside scheduled work hours for highway emergencies within 45 minutes of notification.
