Site Description

The Youth Services Center (YSC) is the District of Columbia’s detention center for male and female youth, responsible for the care and custody of young people placed in secure detention by court order from the DC Superior Court Family Court Division.


Position Overview

The Assistant Principal will assume responsibility for supervising the students and the staff, assisting the Principal with implementing and managing the school’s policies, regulations, and procedures. Achieving academic excellence requires that the Assistant Principal works collaboratively to lead and nurture school staff members and communicate effectively with

students, families, and other stakeholders. Inherent in the position are the responsibilities for the supervision of staff, curriculum development, program evaluation, and supervision of other activities.

Responsibilities

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:

  

Instructional Management 

  • Supervises, coordinates, articulates, and evaluates the implementation of 6-12, GED, and certificate track curriculum
  • Supports teachers in using assessments to oversee the implementation and effectiveness of curriculum and instruction 
  • Designs and implements a new teacher orientation program in collaboration with the administrative team. 
  • Engages in cycles of data-driven instruction and assessments to inform planning and personalize instruction to student needs
  • Collaborates with the special education team to ensure teachers are receiving the necessary support and training to maximize the delivery of instruction 

School/Organizational Improvement

  • Participates in the development of campus improvement plans with staff and other stakeholders
  • Assists the principal in developing, maintaining, and using information systems to maintain records to track progress on campus performance objectives and academic excellence indicators

Personnel Management 

  • Supervises staff time and attendance, and reviews appropriate staff coverage
  • Observes teachers and school office staff, holds follow-up conferences, and maintains records on suggestions for needed improvements 
  • Collaborates with the principal around the hiring, retention, and recruitment of classroom teachers

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management 

  • Supervises operations in the principal’s absence 
  • Assists with planning daily school activities by participating  in the development of class schedules and teacher assignments 
  • Meets regularly with the administrative team to discuss the operations of the school, identify needs, and report on successes
  • Completes promptly all records and reports as required by MAS/SFF, OSSE, DYRS, or requested by the principal in collaboration with the principal and other staff members

Professional Growth and Development 

  • Develops and leads meaningful professional development to nurture a vibrant environment for teachers and students in collaboration with the administrative team

School/Community Relations

  • Articulates MAS/SFF's mission to the outside community and assists in soliciting community and stakeholder support
  • Demonstrates awareness of school-community needs and initiates activities to meet those needs

Supervisory Responsibilities 

  • Shares supervisory responsibilities for professional staff with the principal
  • Supervises teachers and others as assigned
  • Completes the teacher evaluation process for all general education and special education teachers using the MAS/SFF teacher evaluation process
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  Qualifications 

  • Master’s degree, preferably in educational leadership and/or curriculum and instruction
  • Valid OSSE certification or eligible for certification (must be completed within the first 6 months of employment) 
  • Minimum (3) three years of experience in teaching
