The MGH Bridge Clinic is an outpatient, transitional, urgent access drop-in clinic for patients with substance use disorder. The clinic was created through the MGH Substance Use Disorders Initiative and has a mission to compassionately treat patients at all stages of addiction. The role of the Medical Assistant (MA) will contribute to an innovative and dynamic practice model. The person in this position will report to Nurse Manager and receive direction from the Practice Manager and Medical Director as well.

This is a 5 day per week Monday - Friday role located at an in-person clinic. Remote or hybrid work is not possible for this role.

General Responsibilities:
Participates actively in patient care which includes: obtaining chief complaint and vital signs, completing pertinent screening, collecting oral fluid toxicology specimens and ensuring proper identification and handling of specimens, setting-up for procedures performed by the provider (such as injectable naltrexone or buprenorphine), and performing other tasks as determined relevant to the individual patient.

Demonstrates critical thinking skills concerning appropriate documentation of allergies, medication updates, past medical history and any other information that is added to the medical record of an individual patient.

Coordinates referrals to outside facilities with or on behalf of the patient, including the following:

Calls facilities to identify bed availability

Call rehabilitation treatment centers to facilitate placement for patient

Assist patient in completing intake interview with facilities

Gather necessary documents (i.e. progress notes, lab results, image results) that are needed for patient’s referral for treatment and fax it to the facility in compliance with Massachusetts General Hospital’s faxing policy

Assist in arranging transportation for the patient to designated facility

Ability to contact patient’s outpatient providers, case managers, or other treatment providers to help provide data to integrate into patient’s treatment plan

Demonstrates an understanding of the current and future needs of the patient and is able to use decision-making skills to help patients meet those needs following appropriate protocols.

Supports patient care and health care team by anticipating administrative functions that require support including but not limited to: preparing prior authorizations and participating in the approval process for medications as appropriate, monitoring clinical messaging, supporting providers with completion of patient follow up letters, updating the medical record with patient information under the guidance of the provider.

Monitors, orders, and stocks supplies for the clinical and administrative needs of the practice, including building procedure and harm reduction kits.

Transports/escorts patients in the hospital as needed, especially to and from the Emergency Department.

Demonstrates a commitment to excellence in safety, care and service with a strong orientation toward outstanding customer service.



SKILLS & COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

2-3 years of experience in a medical setting preferred

Excellent interpersonal communication skills, whether in person, via the telephone and/or in writing
