Summary:
The Automation Machine Builder is responsible for fabricating components and assembling those components into finished machines, which then become secondary equipment and fixtures used in Suncast production areas. This employee is involved in all aspects of machine construction, including wiring, plumbing pneumatics, and testing. Components will be fabricated using machine tools such as milling machines, lathes, saws, and grinders. This employee must be safety conscious at all times.
Responsibilities:
The following duties are considered essential to this position. Other responsibilities may be assigned.
• Study specifications such as blueprints, sketches, or models, which describe the component to be fabricated. Compute the dimensions and plan the part layout. Machine parts to meet those specifications.
• Set up and operate machine tools such as milling machines, lathes, saws, and grinders.
• Lift stock material and machined parts into position. Power assists may be used. Secure component in a fixture or clamp for machining.
• Examine previously used dies, tools, and fixtures. Recommend modifications to improve tool performance.
• Verify component dimension accuracy throughout the fabrication process.
• Install machine wiring. Read wiring diagrams and plan electrical work. Ensure all wiring meets applicable codes.
• Install electronic components. Follow manufacturer supplied schematics for installation instructions.
• Plumb pneumatics. Follow diagrams and plans provided with the machine design specifications.
• Assemble machines and secondary equipment. This includes all processes needed to make the machine fully functional.
• Work with Quality Assurance to test machine for production quality accuracy.
• Work with production groups and quality assurance to verify dimensions, settings, and alignments.
• Confer with engineers and production supervisors to resolve fixture or assembly problems.
• Assist with the training of maintenance technicians who will be working on secondary equipment.
• Assist with the training of production personnel who will be using the equipment.
• Stay informed of new technology, methods, and materials for this position.
• Support and comply with all Suncast safety policies, quality standards, and housekeeping methods at all times. Suncast policies have been developed to ensure compliance with employee law.
Qualifications:

• High school diploma plus course work in machine tool processes, electrical wiring, and reading electronic schematics required. Five years of experience in a machine shop environment required. Seven years preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write short memos and records concerning work completed. Ability to speak to managers, engineers, and co-workers.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Fundamentals of plane and solid geometry, and trigonometry helpful.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, and schedule form.
• Ability to learn to run Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines. Ability to learn to use a computer for data entry. AutoCad skills are a strong plus.
