The Staff Engineer, SMS architects and builds tools, methodologies, reports, metrics, and data insights to advance our safety risk and assurance processes. You bring value to the team by developing novel processes that integrate seamlessly and efficiently with engineering and operations as well as creating data insights to add transparency for safety risk and influence management decision making.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

  • Implement scalable end to end SMS tooling to establish governance across multiple safety programs including risk assessment, change management, and risk assurance.

  • Collaborate with multifunctional stakeholders for the improvement of tools and processes to support SMS execution.

  • Establish automated quality control processes and metrics that support oversight of products resulting from SMS processes.  

  • Partner with multi-functional teams to assure proper SMS data quality and linkage is in place to ensure the integrity of our safety information and efficiency of our risk monitoring

  • Lead projects by establishing strong relationships across all of Cruise

  • Generate data-driven analysis and actionable insights to influence decision making, project prioritization and improve the quality of new methodologies and processes.  

You should apply for this role if you have the following qualifications:

  • 5+ years of proven experience doing system and process design in a sophisticated product development environment

  • Very comfortable operating in an ambiguous and dynamic startup environment with an evolving project scope.

  • Strong at communicating data-driven decisions to executive audiences

  • Passion for process development and optimization 

  • Ability to balance strategies using automation, process, tooling, and people as solutions

  • Skilled with Looker or similar data visualization tools and querying databases like Big Query

  • Ability to learn quickly, starting with little information and quickly becoming a specialist in your domain

  • BS or MS in Engineering or related field or equivalent combination education and experience

  • Tenacity to lead complex fast-paced initiatives impacting multiple teams and organizations, often with conflicting priorities and schedules

  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills; ability to collaborate with various and diverse set of groups and individuals

Bonus points!

  • Experience working with safety management systems and the systems engineering V-development cycle

  • Experience building or innovating change control processes 

  • Advanced degree in related fields.

  • Experience in rideshare, mobility, fleet management, autonomous systems, or tech

The salary range for this position is $156,400 - 230,000. Compensation will vary depending on location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. You may also be offered a bonus, restricted stock units, and benefits. These ranges are subject to change.
