In this vital role within the Precision Medicine Unit, the Executive Director of Specimen and Data Management will lead the development and management of a world-class biospecimen library that supports Amgen’s translational research capabilities.

This role is responsible for overseeing the planning, acquisition, and management of biospecimens, including antibody PK, biomarker, and imaging specimens, ensuring their optimal utilization in research and compliance with regulatory standards. The Executive Director will establish and lead a consolidated team, fostering a collaborative research environment and driving innovation through advanced IT systems and processes.

This role will report into the Vice President, Precision Medicine.

Responsibilities:

  • Build and Manage a Robust Biospecimen Library: Develop secure and efficient IT systems and processes to track, catalog, and manage biospecimens, ensuring the integrity and accessibility of associated data.

  • Team Leadership and Development: Establish and facilitate a new operating that enhances synergies, harnesses efficiencies, and maximizes impact across the organization.  Develop, and manage a high-performing team.

  • Optimize Specimen Utilization: Optimize process for the efficient and compliant collection, storage, release, and destruction of biospecimens, maximizing their use for research while adhering to regulatory requirements.

  • Streamline Clinical Specimen Operations: Develop standardized protocols for specimen collection, logistics, and data generation to ensure efficiency and quality across clinical trials.

  • Enhance Scientific Programs: Provide program management support to scientific leaders, develop timelines for specimen collection and analysis, and foster collaboration with academic and research partners.

  • Cultivate Strategic Partnerships: Manage and showcase Amgen as a partner of choice in translational testing, specimen storage, analysis, and data sharing. Maintain strong relationships with strategic partners.

  • Ensure Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all regulatory requirements and ethical guidelines governing biospecimen research, ensuring all activities are compliant and ethically sound.

  • Performance Metrics and Reporting: Establish and track performance metrics to measure the success of the biospecimen library and ensure it meets the needs of researchers.

  • Strategic Execution: Translate strategy into action, diagnose pain points, remove roadblocks, and lead the transformation of Amgen’s translational research capabilities.

  • External Innovation: Stay current in technical and scientific advances related to precision medicine and serve as industry thought leader within Amgen related to biobanking through publications and advocacy organization.

What we expect of you

Basic Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree with 6 years of biospecimen/scientific experience OR

  • Master’s degree with 10 years of biospecimen/scientific experience OR

  • Bachelor’s degree with 12 years of biospecimen/scientific experience AND

  • 6 years of managerial experience directly managing people and/or leading teams, systems-based innovations, or programs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in life sciences or related discipline

  • 7+ years of experience leading biospecimen management teams and systems in the bio/pharmaceutical industry

  • Experience in building and managing IT systems for biospecimen libraries

  • Executive presence with the ability to quickly establish credibility and influence at the VP/EVP level

  • Proven leadership experience in biomarker discovery, precision medicine, or related fields, with a strong background in onco
