Department Description
The School of Art and Design (SOAD) offers a wide variety of collaborative, hands on learning opportunities for students. The front of house staff will assist SOAD in successfully running the front of house for public events such as gallery openings, performances, open houses, Creative Arts fellows events, etc. In this role, front of house staff will primarily report to the Production Manager/Art Technician as they run Theater and Dance Front of House. But may also receive communication from SOAD Administrative Assistant or Publicity Manager in regards to events in need of staff.
Job Description
The Front of House, Usher staff greet patrons for performances at the Pauline Theatre, Empty Space Theatre and the Hayworth Chapel. Theater, Dance and music performances are typically at 7:30pm
Students will serve as ushers and box office at SOAD event and in the event the Production Manager cannot be at a performance serve as House Manager also.
These roles include, seating guests, ensuring guests have tickets, managing ticket “sales”, ensuring house is clean, and helping show to run successfully.
Specific to Front of House:
While seated in the lobby, Front of House staff greets patrons and checks them in by asking for patrons name, then clicking the “checked in” box on the ticket site. The Front of house stays in the lobby for the duration of the performance. Total work time is approximately 6:15-9:15.
Specific to Ushering;
Ushers also greet patrons after they check in. They are available to answer questions, suggest the restrooms and keep the patrons from entering the theater until “house opens” at 7. The doors to the theater typically open at 7:30. Total work time is approximately 6:30-7:45.
Job Location/ Hours Required
The majority of the time students will report to either the Pauline Theater in Hayworth Fine Arts Center or the Black Box also known as the Empty Space Theater. Occasionally shows will happen in other locations on campus and in those cases students will be notified ahead of time. This position requires cumulatively 30 hours per semester.
Responsibilities:
- Usher for productions
- Ensure house is clean
- Run box office
- Serve as House Manager as needed
- Other duties as necessary for individual productions
Required Qualifications:
Students must be kind and friendly and able to work quickly when necessary. Students must also be organized and have good time management.

- Must have a minimum 3.4 overall GPA
