DigitalOcean’s Storage Team is a remote team that builds and operates cloud-scale distributed storage powering internal and customer-facing services and products. We’re creating flexible and powerful solutions that our customers will leverage to ship their software as quickly, easily, and safely as possible.
The Droplet Storage Team supports the operations and development of block volumes, backups and image management. We are looking for an engineer who will help lead the development and support of current and future storage platforms at scale. The ultimate goal of the Droplet Storage Team is to create a cohesive singular interface to hypervisor storage where storage class placement decisions are transparent to the hypervisor client and take advantage of the full range of available block storage classes to best satisfy customer needs.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to make impactful contributions to key software, contribute to the open source community, and debug interesting problems at cloudscale. This role reports to the Engineering Manager of the Droplet Storage team and is currently only available remotely.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Leading cross functional engineering efforts to design and deliver innovative storage products
- Mentoring peers and coordinating the efforts of partners in other organizations
- Supporting the creation and operations of distributed systems
- Programming in Go with gRPC and limited development in other languages
- Collaborating with a motivated team of peers
- Solving interesting problems in a technically rewarding environment
What You’ll Add to DigitalOcean:
- Masters degree in computer science or computer engineering and 6+ years minimum, of professional experience or 12+ years minimum, of professional experience in software engineering
- 6+ years minimum, of job related experience designing, building, and operating network-distributed storage products in the enterprise or the cloud, experience building distributed block storage products is a plus
- 6+ years minimum, of job related experience operating and debugging networked software services at global scale
- Working knowledge of CEPH
- Competency in virtualization storage stacks, such as snapshots and layers.
- 6+ years minimum, of job related experience transforming customer and/or product requirements into formal technical designs with the proven ability to communicate these designs to partner stakeholders and break them down into engineering tasks
- 6+ years minimum, of job related experience designing and implementing automated continuous integration, performance, stress, functional, and synthetic test suites for complex multi-service meshes
- 6+ years minimum, of job related experience designing and implementing automated monitoring and alerting for live production services
- 6+ years minimum, of job related experience designing and implementing stateful, automated service orchestration for fleets of hundreds to tens of thousands of nodes
- 6+ years minimum, of job related experience using and supporting production products on Linux
- 3+ years minimum, of job related experience as a technical lead on an engineering team
- 3+ years minimum, of job related experience programming in Golang or other C-like languages and gRPC in a professional environment
- 3+ years minimum, of job related experience designing and implementing asynchronous and event-driven software architectures at scale
- 3+ years minimum, of job related experience delivering solutions customer in containerized infrastructure, Kubernetes is a plus
- 2+ years minimum, of job related experience with Linux virtualization with an emphasis on libvirt and QEMU
- Direct experience integrating and/or debugging storage protocols such as NVMe, NVMe over Fabrics, SATA, SAS, and (i)SCSI
