$20.40 - $30.60The Nurse Summer Externship Program at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist offers a nine-week paid opportunity for senior nursing students to gain valuable hands-on experience while working alongside our experienced teams at our five acute hospitals. This program serves as a significant stepping stone, helping senior nursing students enhance their clinical expertise as they prepare for the transition to become licensed Registered Nurses.
Program Dates: June 1, 2026 - August 1, 2026

Eligibility Requirements:
- Nursing students entering their final year
- Rising senior enrolled in an accredited Associates or Bachelor of Science nursing program
- Scheduled to complete Med/Surg clinical by Spring, 2026
- Must be listed as an NA I with the North Carolina Nurse Aide I Registry by April 17, 2026
- Must have NA II listed with the North Carolina Board of Nursing by May 15, 2026
- Must possess current Basic Cardiac Life Support AHA (BCLS) or American Red Cross BLS certification
- Must be available for full-time Summer employment (3 12 hr. shifts plus weekly 4-hour educational session or clinical observation), including rotating shifts, weekends, and holiday.

Your Impact on Patient Care:
In addition to your involvement in our Summer Program, the Extern can expect to have the following responsibilities:
1) Assist in implementing the nursing process by providing direct patient care to patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse
2) Perform specific procedures accurately while being supervised by a Registered Nurse
3) Establish and uphold a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, self, teammates, and facility
4) Ensure complete, accurate, and timely communication of patient information
5) Actively engage with leaders, teammates, patients, and family members in a practical, positive, and professional manner.
6) Demonstrate personal responsibility and initiative for performance, professional growth, and advancement
7) Provide age-developmentally appropriate patient care in accordance with Age/Developmental Specific Care Guidelines for the specific age groups served
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: Rising senior nursing student in an accredited ADN or BSN program. Completion of an approved Nurse Aide I and Nurse Aide II course.
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: Listed with the applicable state Health Care Personnel Registry as a Nurse Aide I and applicable state Board of Nursing as a Nurse Aide II or recent completion of coursework and testing to be listed on the registry as an NAII (documentation required). Will need to be listed on the NAII registry prior to the first day of patient care. Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification required on first day of employment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Participates in the implementation of the nursing process by giving direct care to patients under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN). Assists with admissions, transfers, discharges, pre- and post-operative care. 2. Creates and maintains a safe and therapeutic physical environment (i.e., hallways, utility rooms, par stock, kitchen, etc.) and minimizes risk of injury by promoting fall precautions, use of call bell, side rails, and other safety precautions, including the use of appropriate lift equipment environment for patients, self, co-workers, and facility. 3.
