Research Assistant

The Language and Cognition Lab in the Department of Cognitive Science is seeking a Research Assistant to work on a research project examining spatial and language development between the ages of 4-11 in typically-developing children, including behavioral and brain imaging studies. This is a full-time position funded by a grant through June 30, 2027.

The research project is a collaboration between the Language and Cognition Lab at Johns Hopkins University and the Learning and Development Lab at Georgetown University Medical School. This role’s time would be split between both campuses, with all experiments (behavioral and imaging) carried out at the Georgetown facility in Washington D.C. This position reports to the faculty director of the Language and Cognition Lab.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

• Recruit and interact with child participants and their parents.
• Test child participants in behavioral and imaging experiments in the Georgetown lab.
• Perform administrative responsibilities associated with these experiments including maintain lab records, upload and organize data, manage IRB documentation and reviews, and carry out preliminary analyses under the guidance of the project PIs.
• Prepare detailed written protocols of all experiments.
• Carry out preliminary analyses of data.
• Assist in preparation of conference submissions and manuscripts to be submitted for publication.

Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

• Experience carrying out behavioral and imaging experiments with young children.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to work well with others on the research team.

Supervisory Responsibility

• Recruit undergraduate research assistants who work throughout the academic year and during the summers.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's Degree in related discipline.
• Additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Cognitive Science, Psychology, or related field.
• At least 1 year of experience recruiting and testing children between the ages of 4 years and adolescence.
  

• Two to five years of experience in a Cognitive Science (or related) lab setting.
• Background in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or related fields, with special focus on children’s cognitive development.
• Fluency with programming languages such as Python, Java.
• Fluency with statistical packages such as SPSS, R.
