Job Description:

NDCS is seeking candidates for the Recreation Specialist at the Omaha Correctional Center. Candidates with experience in relevant recreational activities in a custodial setting are encouraged to apply.

Hiring rate of position is $21.479/hour PLUS an additional $3/hour facility differential for hours worked!

DUTIES:
Assists in the planning, development and implementation of leisure time program for inmates which includes, but is not limited to: athletics, music, television programming, cultural events and activities. Assist in policy development. Supervises the daily use of equipment and materials to assure minimum breakage, loss, etc. Assists in the maintenance of records and keeps written records on residents participation in all leisure time programs. Develop and coordinate outside community contacts. Encourage participation in events. Manipulate doors and locks. Assist in the maintenance of security and sanitation. Perform searches. Move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.


 

Requirements / Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in recreation management, recreation therapy, or a related field. Experience in recreation management, recreation therapy, or a related field may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications: Candidates with experience in relevant recreational activities in custodial setting are encouraged to apply. Bilingual skills in English and Spanish desired and assessed.

Other: Transcripts required prior to appointment. Must be able to work evenings and weekends. Applicants accepting a job offer must pass the following pre-employment exams in this order: medical exam and, at a randomly announced time, pass a drug test. Once at the Staff Training Academy, must successfully complete the fully paid NE Corrections Training Program.


 

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Knowledge of: rules, regulations and strategies of sports and other recreational activities; institution rules and regulations; principles, techniques, and practices of recreational activity; CPR; self-defense; behavior modification treatment programs; first-aid.

Skill in: performing various sports, crafts, music, and other recreational activities; operating standard recreational equipment; leading recreational activities.

Ability to: successfully complete training courses in CPR, self-defense, behavior modification treatment programs and first-aid; learn to handle residents in all stages of development and rehabilitation; effectively terminate deviant behavior; explain rules and regulations of sports and recreational activities in a positive manner; communicate effectively by giving instructions and documenting resident participation; understand the behavior modification treatment programs; organize, direct, develop interest, and instruct residents in recreational activities; communicate effectively; coordinate activities with outside community and volunteer groups; handle residents in all stages of rehabilitation; organize activities; actively participate in activities such as sports, games, and music.
