The role of the Laboratory Assistant IV is to ensure optimal operation of an automated specimen handling and processing in preanalytical automated line. This position will be responsible for the day to day operations of the instrumentation including maintenance of the instrumentation to include daily, weekly, monthly, and ad hoc maintenance as needed with the guidance of the technical support vendor with the approval of a supervisor or manager. Enhanced features and revisions may be planned but would be reviewed and approved by a supervisor or manager. The Laboratory Assistant IV will work in the main core laboratory preanalytical services department which processes patient samples from SHC, LPCH, UHA, and offsite laboratories. Other manual specimen handling and processing , including accessioning and receiving, will be part of this job description.

What you will do
- Perform start up tasks and systems checks at the start of the instrument operation.
- Load samples in entry point according to the configured route.
- Drain the rotor room drain hose in the collection area.
- Empty solid waste container in the collection and discard container.
- Refill aliquot tubes in the bar code laber as needed.
- Fill pipette tip trays, empty solid waste container, and perform leak check.
- Fill flex caps in the caps reservoir.
- Inspect and clean bi-directional host workstation handler.
- Replace the barcode label when needed.
- Keep track of and maintain a par level of consumables.
- Recognize when the automated instrument is not performing as expected and be able to trouble shoot the instrument as needed.
- Recognize Alarm Notification; the Alarm Icon, status indication by the color and/or flashing lights.
- Ability to access the Alarm History through the Maintenance Menu in the workstation and Recognize the alarm code, area where the alarm occurred, Level of alarm, Message of alarm.
- View the details and perform the suggested remedy of the selected alarm to correct the issue.
- Ability to resolve a sample jam.
- Maintenance tasks need to be completed regularly to keep the system up and running. A maintenance log will help track the required frequency of the maintenance task.
- Contact the Vendor when needed to troubleshoot and provide corrective action.
- Communicate with the Supervisors and with the analytical team on any issues encountered.
- Accessions patient information accurately into Laboratory computer system. Checks all requests for proper and accurate patient information Consults with Supervisor, Lead or Technologist when unclear or unusual requests received. Notifies physicians, nursing units, clinics etc. when sample received is either inappropriate for testing or otherwise compromised.
- After processing of samples is complete distributes accordingly, ensuring that samples are routed to appropriate areas in the laboratory. Distributes STAT requests in a timely as well as appropriate manner.
- Answers telephones, responds to inquiries regarding status of testing, transferring calls as necessary, answering all inquiries in a polite and efficient manner.
- Communicates with physicians, nurses, visitors and other laboratory/ hospital staff in a cooperative and courteous manner. Responds to their needs appropriately with minimal waiting time.
- Follows all departmental policies regarding attendance, punctuality and health and safety.
- Independently resolves problems encountered in routine work.
- Recognizes problems or requests which require Supervisor and/or Technologist assistance when appropriate.
- Keeps all work areas clean and disposes of all waste appropriately.
- Keeps current with all laboratory procedures, techniques and changes in all areas of the laboratory through which he or she rotates.
- Keeps work areas well stocked with necessary supplies and notifies appropriate personnel when inventory levels are low and inform a Lead, Supervisor and/or Manager.
- Maintains all logs, records and data etc. in a legible and precise manner.
