JOB SUMMARY

This position serves as the first responder to water leaks in the distribution system. Work involves investigating water leaks in the street, in the customer's yard, at the curb, and at the meter; repairing small leaks; replacing meter washers, meter wheels, and meter box lids; taking photos as needed; 'utilizing mobile equipment and peripheral devices for communication and recording of information; and making decisions concerning field conditions. This position interacts with customers; researches high bill issues checking meters for possible cause; conducting pressure checks; and communicates with customers on findings and potential resolutions.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Receives and completes assigned service work orders, while accurately recording the water meter readings.
  • Conducts pre-trip truck checks.
  • Enters pertinent notes associated with the work performed and any notable conditions at each service address into a portable laptop.
  • Submits notifications of inoperable or malfunctioning meters and/or metering equipment as required.
  • Evaluates field conditions to determine if there is an irregularity or condition at the service address that would cause high consumption or unknown usage to occur; reports findings.
  • Educates customer on the operational function of a water meter and how to determine the location of a leak
  • Informs customer on the practices related to leaks and the responsibilities/limitations for service repairs on private property issues.
  • Verifies and confirms meter and transmitter numbers match customer account.
  • Inspects water meter connections for leaks; replaces material as needed to repair leak
  • Determines if a leak is private or City responsibility; if determined to be City leak, replaces washers or replaces meter wheel or repairs leak on tail piece inside the meter box; and if determined to be priority or emergency, takes pictures and attaches to service order.
  • Flushes fire hydrants for water quality.
  • Performs meter box maintenance by cleaning out dirt and debris; ensures box lid fits correctly.
  • Investigates customer complaints regarding leaks; makes repairs as necessary; and escalates matter if additional work is required.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and daily inspections of vehicle and field computer equipment for proper function; reports malfunctions or deficiencies.
  • Communicates to external customers by telephone and door tag on identified issues and repairs performed.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited school.
  • One (1) years of related work experience; preferably supplemented with customer service and water utility operations experience.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations:

  • Requires valid driver's license along with an acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of identifying and repairing leaks.
