Cleveland Clinic’s General OR team is a dynamic surgical environment that includes GI, Colon, Oncology, Bariatric and Endocrine procedures. Surgeries range from 2 to 12 hours, including complex cases such as colon and intestinal procedures, transplants, Whipple surgeries and oncology interventions. Working in the OR offers a focused, structured approach to patient care, strong teamwork and clearly defined roles, with limited patient contact while patients are under anesthesia. As an integral member of the surgical team, you will assist fellow caregivers in delivering exceptional care from pre-op to recovery, interact with patients and families to enhance their experience and provide education as needed. Cleveland Clinic also offers extensive professional development resources, including continuing education and skill-building courses, to help you grow and advance in your nursing career.
Whether you are an experienced RN or a new graduate, all nurses entering an OR specialty unit participate in a comprehensive orientation program to ensure a smooth transition into the surgical environment. In this role, you will collaborate closely with the surgical team to deliver exceptional patient care, from the initial introduction to the final send-off. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic system provides nurses with many professional development resources, including furthering education and online/in-person courses to enhance your skills.
A caregiver in this position will have their shifts assigned after orientation. Orientation is Monday through Friday from 7:00am to 3:30pm and is 6 months long.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide nursing care in an operative setting to patients undergoing surgical or invasive procedures.
- Perform scrub and circulating functions.
- Prepare the OR, surgical instruments and equipment for use.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Graduate from an accredited school of Professional Nursing
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
- One year of RN experience OR completion of Cleveland Clinic’s Perioperative Residency Program
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) within six months of hire
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements:
