About the role
Position Summary
Reporting to the Chief Accounting Officer (CAO), the VP Accounting is responsible to establish and maintain accounting and internal control processes and procedures for internal and external financial reporting. Key activities associated with these responsibilities include the accurate and timely recording of financial transactions; creating and maintaining accounting policies; oversight of the monthly close, including financial statement analytics; coordinating external audits, and managing the relationship with the external auditor. This individual will interface with all parts of the organization to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting. Key areas include Finance, Legal, Investor Relations, IT, HR, and Operations. This position will maintain quality control over financial transactions and reporting. The VP Accounting will be engaged with system implementations that impact the financial statements or the control environment and is involved with other special projects and process improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
- Leads and mentors a financial accounting team of 10+ full-time employees across multiple locations, fostering a collaborative and high-performing work environment.
- Leads the property/projects accounting/accounts payable, SEC reporting, and technical accounting.
- Collaborates with department leaders to create and maintain development plans for the supervision, training, and evaluation of financial accounting department staff.
- Supports month-end close activities to ensure financial statements are accurate in support of internal and external reporting (including closing procedures, account reconciliations, fixed asset maintenance).
- Oversees financial control activities, including the review and analysis of monthly and quarterly activity, disclosures, and supporting materials for internal and external distribution.
- Keeps teams accountable for actions, provides resources and support, applies clear and consistent performance standards.
- Leads the teams responsible for preparation of financial reports provided to third parties including: the 10-K and 10-Q, debt and equity offerings, and earnings press releases, monthly internal financial reporting and coordinating with FP&A
- Monitors current and proposed changes to U.S. GAAP accounting standards and SEC regulations and develops related accounting policies, procedures, and implementation strategies.
- Engaged with system implementations that impact the financial statements or the control environment and is involved with other special projects and process improvement initiatives.
- Serves as the primary liaison and informational resource for external and internal audit teams. Ensures that auditors are provided with the necessary documentation and support on a timely basis.
- Collaborates with other functions including Finance, Investor Relations, Legal, IT, HR, and Operations
- Communicates accounting issues and resolution to impacted groups and external auditors, as appropriate.
- Prepares and presents qualitative and quantitative accounting matters to senior executives and CAO
- Ensures continued maintenance and development of business processes and accounting policies to strengthen internal controls in compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley.
- Provides financial management support for projects as requested by Senior Management. Works collaboratively and often cross-functionally on various special projects and other assignments.
- Performs or leads any other controller-related tasks as necessary.
Requirements
