Director, Construction Risk Management and Architectural Engineering

The Director will be responsible for leading the Construction Risk Management team. This is a player/coach role that will require the review and approval of plans, specifications, budgets, schedules, contracts and reports.  The director also performs site inspections when necessary or requested, qualifies and engages outside consultants to perform pre-closing analysis, and monitors inspections. National experience is highly desirable related to entitlements, zoning, and the construction monitoring process.  All of these are key elements in protecting Capital One Bank’s loan assets. 

Responsibilities: 

Manage the performance of the Construction Risk Management team and be an independent contributor tasked with the following:

  • Review project plans, specifications, construction agreements, cost, budgets, and project schedules as required under the terms of our construction loan commitments, as a key element in the loan closing and disbursement process

  • Analyze and mitigate risks to Capital One Bank

  • Work with the Construction Risk Management team to identify mitigation strategies regarding assigned construction loans 

  • Perform occasional site inspections of work in process on construction loans when required or requested.  Attend progress meeting with outside consultants, developers, and contractors

  • Review third-party inspection reports for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with Capital One Bank’s requirements

  • Work closely with internal teams such as, Construction Loan Administration, Asset Management and Credit to monitor construction loans with respect to funding, budget, and schedule adequacy

  • Make recommendations for funding, budget, and schedule adequacy

  • Attend Real Estate/Portfolio Management Construction Meetings to present project status and/ or potential issues

  • Provide monthly status reports on construction loans to Asset Managers

  • Inspect properties representing collateral on construction loans in conjunction with annual credit reviews to provide a check of the physical condition of collateral

  • Occasionally perform annual reviews/inspections on real estate collateral for term loans.  Assist with coordinating and scheduling annual inspections performed by third party consulting firm

  • Assist with qualifying, hiring, and managing work products of specific outside consultants authorized to perform construction and inspection services for Capital One Bank

  • Perform additional functions to include, but not limited to, review of Property Condition Assessments, Seismic Risk Assessments, and Planning and Zoning reports related to term and construction loans

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Architecture, Engineering, or Construction Management

  • At least 7 years of financial services experience working with commercial real estate transactions and construction or at least 7 years of consulting experience with a focus on lender construction monitoring 

  • At least 7 years experience as a team lead

 Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Registered Architect including affiliation with one or more of the following professional organizations: American Institute of Architect’s, the Urban Land Institute, or a Construction Specifications Institute 

  • 5+  years of multifamily experience

The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Please note that this salary information is solely for candidates hired to perform work within one of these locations, and refers to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated based upon the agreed upon number of hours to be regularly worked.

Los Angeles (incl. Newport Beach), California (Hybrid On-Site): $202,400 - $231,000 for Director, Architectural Eng.

San Francisco, California (Hybrid On-Site): $214,500 - $244,800 for Director, Architectural Eng.

Candidates hired to work in other locations will be subject to the pay range associated with that location, and the actual annualized salary amount offered to any candidate at the time of hire will be reflected solely in the candidate’s offer letter.
