About the role

Your Role

The Blue Shield of California Commercial Finance team is responsible for providing financial planning and analysis support for the mid to large segment employer groups. The Financial Analyst, Experienced will report to the Financial Analyst, Principal. In this role, you will be responsible for the monthly close deliverables which include analysis, reporting, and summarizing membership and financial data. You will also work with large sets of data to maintain multiple databases, produce monthly and ad hoc reports, and support membership surveys. You will work closely to collaborate with other stakeholders (actuarial, accounting, underwriting, enterprise finance, growth solutions).

Your Work

In this role, you will:

  • Provide expertise related to budgeting, revenue recognition, reimbursement, and system and processes changes
  • Correlates Revenue/Expense to volumes and prepares reports to assist financial management in assessing financial performance
  • Analyze membership and financial results, trends, performance metrics and provide root cause analysis to support contracting and/or business decisions
  • Recommend budget adjustments, and other cost/revenue improvement measures
  • Performs detailed variance analysis against expected budget, forecast, prior periods, modeling or other benchmarks as required to support operations
  • Collect and evaluate data, develop and maintain financial models, analyze results and conduct scenario analyses to support membership and financial forecasts and strategic initiatives
  • Create, maintain, and manipulate various databases to create meaningful tools for analysis
  • Support regulatory and third-party surveys, internal and external inquiries, cost accounting, and internal reporting
  • Identify business process opportunities, test solutions, and revises desk level procedures to reflect changes. Identify opportunities to automate/digitize processes
  • Follow and conduct audit processes and review internal controls to ensure financial transactions are accurate, timely and comply with accounting standards, principles and company policy 
  • Provide policy guidance and interpretation to ensure financial records are consistent and comply with company policies and GAAP 
  • Support and potentially lead projects as a subject matter expert

Your Knowledge and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
  • Requires at least 3 years of prior relevant experience
  • Requires advanced Office skills (Access, Excel, Word, PowerPoint) 
  • Requires strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex analytical data simply and connect them to business results for different audiences
  • Requires ability to learn and adapt quickly 
  • Basic SQL/Tableau desired but not required
