The role in detail
We are seeking a detail-oriented Data Governance Specialist to join our AI Center of Excellence. In this role, you'll be instrumental in establishing and maintaining data governance frameworks, ensuring the quality, integrity, and compliance of data assets. You'll leverage Microsoft Purview and other Azure-native services to catalog, classify, and manage data, enabling a data-driven culture built on trust and accessibility. This position offers a unique opportunity to grow your expertise in a rapidly evolving field while collaborating with data engineering, analytics, and business teams.
The key responsibilities of this role will include:
- Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of data governance policies, standards, and procedures across our Azure environment.
- Utilize Microsoft Purview as the core tool for metadata management, including automated scanning, data classification, and data lineage tracking.
- Manage and curate enterprise data catalogs to improve data discovery and understanding. Support the creation and maintenance of business glossaries.
- Monitor and report on key data quality metrics. Collaborate with data owners and technical teams to identify and resolve data quality issues proactively.
- Support initiatives to ensure data assets comply with internal policies and external regulations (e.g., GDPR, ISO standards). Assist in implementing sensitivity labeling and data access policies.
- Work closely with data engineers, data scientists, and business stakeholders to embed governance into data pipelines and foster a culture of responsible data usage.
- Assist in defining and documenting data ownership, stewardship roles, and data flow processes.
To be successful at this role you need the following (hard and soft skills):
- Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field is preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in a data-focused role, with at least 1-2 years specifically in Data Governance, Data Quality, or Metadata Management.
- Practical, hands-on experience with Microsoft Purview or a similar tool for tasks such as metadata scanning, glossary management, and data classification.
- Foundational understanding of core Azure data services (e.g., Azure Data Lake Storage, Azure SQL Database, Azure Synapse).
- Familiarity with data pipeline concepts and how governance integrates with tools like Azure Data Factory or Databricks.
- Solid understanding of key data management concepts, including data quality, data lineage, data modeling, and master data management principles.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for a non-technical audience.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and a keen attention to detail.
