Job Summary

Computer Aided Design (CAD) drafter/operator creates electrical schematics and drawings, such as wiring diagrams, cable fabrication, assemblies and panel layout drawings for custom-designed voice, cable, transmissions, timing, and imaging communications systems. Determines and prepares drawing using drafting methods, procedures, and techniques that meet NASA and customer requirements. Drawings are used to communicate engineering requirements, design, and other information. The operator uses recognized systems of symbols, legends, shadings, and lines having specific meanings in drawings.

This is a represented staff position with the IBEW Union.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Design drawings in two-dimensional and three-dimensional space.
• Creates and revises production drawings (detail and assembly drawings).
• Using engineering rough sketch of proposed drawing, dimension of parts, materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project creates final drawing.
• Utilizes knowledge of various machines, engineering practices, mathematics, building materials and other physical sciences to complete drawings.
• Drafts detailed multi-view drawings of communication systems.
• Uses special techniques in schematic drawing, isometric, orthographic, perspective projection or other techniques of technical illustration.
• Upgrade or update drawing to current customer engineering standards.
• Sets up and maintains an organized file system for retrieving drawings.
• Communicates with engineering, field system specialists, quality and operations regarding new and revised prints.
• Working knowledge of tolerances, materials, finishes, etc. May provide work leadership to lower-level drafters.
• Provide, update and maintain all required documentation, reports, and logs etc., manually or in electronic databases.
• Make recommendations to improve work quality, efficiencies, and productivity.
• Adhere to OSHA, NASA, Company and customer safety requirements.
• May assist in training others.

Requirements

• Exercise considerable initiative, latitude, independent judgment and the ability to design independently with only general technical direction.
• Ability to develop original design work after receiving the design goal or problem, general method of processing and engineering advice on related theoretical aspects to be taken into account in the design.
• Proficient in use of all applicable CAD equipment.
• Comprehensive knowledgeable of all applicable NASA and customer drawing requirements.

• Must be a U.S. citizen with ability to pass a NASA background investigation.
• Must be able to pass an initial and random drug testing.

• Must have and maintain a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Education and Experience

• Associate of Science or Technical Trade School in Computer-Aided Drafting, Design Technology or related field, plus 4 years related experience or successful completion of a State or Military approved bona fide work-related apprenticeship program recognized by the US Department of Labor.

• Experience may be substituted for Education: 1.5 years related experience is equivalent to 1 year of formal education.
• Primarily office setting performing sedentary work with some walking, standing, and carrying light weight objects.
• Occasionally may be required to physically go to work site and review work requirements and complete work.
• Requiring the use of ladders, making observation from work platforms.
