Your Specific Responsibilities:
This senior chemist position involves the quality assurance (QA) of the statewide Newborn Screening program, parallel studies, pilot studies, and research. The incumbent is expected to use independent judgment and technical skill to accomplish the tasks assigned. Responsible for the supervision of staff within the Newborn Screening program including appraisals, planning, and directing their work, approving leave, and having the authority for hiring and taking disciplinary action or effectively recommending such actions. This position will act as the Technical Lead. This position spends the majority of the time engaged in supervisory responsibilities. This includes communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees in addition to planning and directing employees' work. The incumbent has the authority to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, or discipline subordinate employees or effectively recommend such action. The incumbent will also be required to develop performance expectations, meet with staff regularly to discuss performance, complete performance reviews, maintain vacation and work schedules, ensuring proper coverage, and complete timesheets.
Reviews, evaluates and reports results on specimens received for proficiency testing and maintains data concerning reproducibility, reliability and specificity of tests used in the Newborn Screening Program. Prepares, maintains, and updates QA documentation for laboratory activities in the designated format. Consults with senior staff concerning needs and problems associated with proficiency testing, quality control and documentation needed to meet licensure requirements.
Establishes and maintains ongoing production monitoring program to ensure that results are reported within turn-around-time requirements. Identifies problems with specimens or procedures that delay reporting of results. Regularly reports production/performance data and findings to senior staff and laboratory administration. Prepares monthly and quarterly performance reports with assistance of unit chemists.
Audits QA data for each unit to evaluate for completeness and compliance with applicable guidelines. Audits procedures in each unit to evaluate for adherence to establish methods and program. Investigates discrepancies and reporting errors. Documents the results of these audits and reports findings to senior staff and laboratory administration.
Maintains inventory records for reagents, materials, standards, and controls used in testing procedures. Coordinates with senior staff and laboratory administration to schedule reordering.
Trains and instructs staff, as needed, with regard to quality control procedures and quality assurance objectives to ensure data integrity and adequate QA program documentation.
Acts as the technical lead for validation of new kit lot numbers and for the planning, coordination, and performance of pilot studies for new disorders and parallel studies to evaluate new methodology or test reagents to ensure that quality assurance objectives are established and achieved. Responsible for summarizing study data, producing reports including analysis of feasibility of implementing at BPHL and making recommendations to management and CLIA director. Provides oversight for validation and implementation of new test methods.
Provides assistance to units of Newborn Screening as needed and performs related duties as required. Assumes the duties of senior staff members in their absence.
