Purpose

The NAGPRA Technician, under the guidance of the Head of Compliance for NAGPRA, will assist with preparing NAGPRA-eligible artifacts and associated records, housed at the Texas Archeological Research Laboratory (TARL), for repatriation. This position plays a vital role in inventorying, rehabilitating, and rehousing artifacts and documents, with a primary attention on NAGPRA-related requirements. The NAGPRA Technician will work closely with various departments, collaborating to ensure the repository database system is updated, the artifact locations are accurately tracked, as well as addressing any revisions or discrepancies. This position will report to the Head of Compliance for NAGPRA, and will provide valuable support to the Records, Collections, and Human Osteology departments in identifying associated funerary objects and completing affiliation documentation for internal purposes and Tribal consultation. Occasionally, assistance may be required in preparing additional consultation documentation. This role also involves supervising temporary staff, students, and volunteers, as well as assisting Tribal partners. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on organizational needs. This position is funded through 5/31/2028, with options for renewal based on available funding.

Responsibilities

  • Helps prepare documentation for consultation and provides support to the Head of Compliance for NAGPRA, Head of Human Osteology, Head of Records and Head of Collections. Aids in the preparation for consultation. Engages in consultation to define and identify various types of NAGPRA eligible cultural objects in the TARL collections.
  • Conducts inventorying, rehabilitation, and rehousing (cleaning, sorting, repackaging, re-inventorying) of artifacts and associated documents. Reunites funerary objects with remains. Prepares summaries and assists in the preparation of inventory completion notices.
  • Works with staff across TARL departments, conducting background research on ownership, provenance, provenience, and all previous analysis/ consultation. Compiles information per TARL’s standardized format. Conducts NAGPRA eligibility assessment and thoroughly documents decision making process.
  • Works in tandem with TARL departments to update the repository database system (tracking locations, revising information and discrepancies).
  • Aids the Head of Compliance for NAGPRA in supervising and training temporary staff, students, and volunteers; assists researchers as needed.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Possess a bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or a related field and four years of related experience. Have a solid understanding of NAGPRA regulations and best practices, along with knowledge of cultural resources laws, specifically the Antiquities Code of
