Senior Technical Mobile Product Manager

McClatchy is hiring a Technical Mobile Product Manager who is a domain expert in mobile apps. This is not a generalist product role — it is for a mobile-first thinker with deep technical fluency and industry experience leading native iOS and Android app development from concept to launch.
This role will own the entire lifecycle of McClatchy’s next-generation mobile apps, including strategy, UX, roadmap, partner management, and app store execution. You will lead one of the most visible and high-impact initiatives in the company — redefining the mobile experience for millions of readers across more than 30 brands.
The anticipated base pay range for this position is between 150k and 180k annually. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, relevant education, department equity, training, geography, and local wage and hours laws.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the strategy, development, and launch of McClatchy’s mobile apps across iOS and Android platforms, including News, Lifestyle & Entertainment, and new verticals like NewsHunter.
- Own and drive the mobile product roadmap, including feature prioritization, UX/UI improvements, and technical delivery plans.
- Serve as the primary point of contact with our mobile app development partner, overseeing sprint planning, backlog grooming, delivery timelines, QA, and release management.
- Manage the entire App Store and Google Play Store lifecycle:
- Submit and release new app versions
- Handle metadata, ASO, compliance, and privacy requirements
- Monitor reviews and respond to feedback
- Track crash reports, app performance, and user ratings
- Guide the implementation of mobile-specific features, such as push notifications, in-app messaging, biometric login, affiliate shopping integrations, personalization engines, and gamification mechanics.
- Partner with analytics teams to define event tracking and KPIs in platforms like Amplitude, Firebase, or Segment, and turn insights into product enhancements.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Marketing, Editorial, Design, and Engineering to ensure the mobile experience aligns with business objectives and user needs.
- Ensure all apps meet or exceed standards for performance, security, accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA), and UX responsiveness.
- Stay on top of the latest trends in mobile OS updates, SDK changes, platform guidelines, privacy frameworks, and new app technologies.
- Evaluate and optimize mobile release cadences, user acquisition flows, onboarding experiences, and monetization opportunities.
Required Qualifications
- 5–7+ years of product management experience with a deep focus on native mobile applications.
- Proven track record managing end-to-end mobile app development in both iOS and Android ecosystems.
- Expert understanding of App Store Connect, Google Play Console, ASO best practices, and release pipelines.
- Experience managing third-party mobile development vendors or offshore dev teams.
- Technical fluency in SDK integrations, RESTful APIs, CI/CD pipelines, and mobile performance tooling.
- Strong user-centric mindset with attention to UI/UX details and a passion for quality mobile experiences.
- Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Figma, Firebase, Amplitude, Braze, GitHub, and CMS platforms (CUE, WordPress).
- Experience in media, subscription-based apps, or content-driven mobile products is a strong plus.
- Outstanding communication, collaboration, and organizational skills with experience presenting to executive stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience launching and maintaining multi-app or multi-brand mobile portfolios.
- Knowledge of AI-enhanced app features (e.g., personalization, summarization, conversational search).
- Exposure to ad monetization, paywall systems, and affiliate commerce integrations.
- Background in working with responsive tablet UIs and internationalization/localization (especially Spanish-language apps).
