Position Summary:
The Interim Medical Director for Labor & Delivery will hold responsibility for oversight of daily operations, quality and safety initiatives, patient experience, faculty and resident engagement, and interdepartmental collaboration. They will also serve as a visible leader in fostering a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement, and excellence in maternal health outcomes.
Essential Functions (Principal Duties and Job Responsibilities):
Provide medical leadership and oversight of Labor & Delivery services at Nashville General Hospital.
Partner with nursing leadership, residents, and faculty to ensure safe, evidence-based, and patient-centered care.
Collaborate with the Department Chair and hospital administration to implement and monitor quality and safety initiatives.
Support residency and medical student education through supervision, mentorship, and direct teaching on Labor & Delivery.
Assist in the development and enforcement of clinical protocols, policies, and best practices aligned with national standards.
Participate in root cause analyses, quality improvement projects, and reviews of adverse events.
Serve as the liaison between the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and hospital leadership for Labor & Delivery operations.
Promote an environment of equity, inclusion, and collegiality within the team.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Possess understanding of intrapartum care, cesarean section pathways, VBAC, labor analgesia/epidural, neonatal resuscitation, obstetric emergencies (PPH, shoulder dystocia, fetal distress).
- Knowledge of patient safety science, adverse event analysis, RCA processes, and QI methodologies
- Familiarity with Joint Commission, ACOG guidelines, CMS/Medicare rules, HIPAA, credentialing/privileging processes
- Familiarity with medical education curricula design, resident/fellow assessment, and scholarly activity expectations
- Clear, persuasive, and collaborative communication with clinicians, trainees, nursing, anesthesia, NICU, administration, and external partner
- Curriculum design, trainee assessment, mentoring, and faculty development
- Proficiency with perinatal data systems, EHR-based reporting, basic statistics, and outcome measurement
- Effective liaison with NICU, anesthesia, nursing leadership, maternal-fetal medicine, pediatrics, social work, and hospital governance.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Preferred:
Additional expertise in fetal surgery, perinatal palliative care, or regionalization programs..
Knowledge of remote monitoring, tele-L&D workflows, and virtual consults when relevant.
Experience leading an L&D service line.
Proven success in quality improvement initiatives
Education and Experience Required:
- MD or DO degree with board certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- Significant clinical experience in obstetrics and high-risk obstetrics.
- Active in intrapartum care and neonatal resuscitation.
- Track record of involvement in education (residency/fellowship teaching, faculty development, or medical students)
Education and Experience Preferred:
Subspecialty fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine or equivalent board certification.
Licensure, Certification or Registration Required:
Board-Certified in OB/GYN (ABOG Equivalent)
Active medical licensure.
DEA certification.
Eligible for obtaining hospital privileges to lead Labor and Delivery, including cesarean delivery and obstetric anesthesia collaboration per hospital policy.
Licensure, Certification or Registration Preferred:
Certification in OB ultrasound, fetal therapy.
