About the role
Project Kuiper is an initiative to launch a constellation of Low Earth Orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. This role will be to lead a time to conceive, design, analyze, execute, and commission custom assembly tooling and test equipment for both satellite development and production.

The Ground Support Equipment (GSE) team is responsible for designing , analyzing and commissioning tooling and automation equipment for Satellite testing and production. This is a team of engineers and support technicians to provide in-house unique and creative solutions.

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $120,800/year in our lowest geographic market up to $234,900/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits. Key job responsibilities
- Lead the tooling team to efficiently develop creative design solution for high volume satellite manufacturing.
- Work with vehicle, manufacturing, integration and operation teams to rapidly define and conceive solutions to unique problems.
- Apply extensive knowledge and experience guiding, directing, and motivating teams.
- Develop and manage standards for design, analysis and documentation.
- Manage team tasking, project workload, and project priorities, including overall team schedule and budgets.
- Hire and develop requisite talent to ensure the team can meet Kuiper's demand.

Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience with designing custom project systems including 3D modeling, drawings, and GD&T.
- 3+ years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
- 3+ years management or technical leadership experience.
- 2+ years of experience with project management, schedule, and budgeting.
- 2+ years of experience of structural analysis including hand calculations and Finite Element Analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in designing Systems of Tooling for complex products in medium to high volume manufacturing.
- Strong background in the design of mechanism, bolted and welded structures, assembly fixtures, alignment fixtures, test fixtures, rigging, and material handling in a project based environment.
- Mechanical experience with robotics, motor sizing, power transmission design, sensors and feedback devices, pneumatic systems, end effectors, material handling and other mechanism.
- Experience in designs required for product environmental testing (Thermal, TVAC, Vibration, Shock, etc).
- Strong knowledge of mechanical engineering fundamentals including statics, dynamics, and mechanics of material.
- Expert experience with FEMAP / NASTRAN
- Experience with Siemens NX 3D modeling package
- Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes and materials used in assembly tooling and rapid prototyping
