Description
This is a full-time, direct placement for WK Thomas and Associates, Inc.
The Estimator is responsible for project material and labor take-off and pricing. The position requires a detailed understanding of the commercial construction process and a working knowledge of estimating software programs. Proficiency in MS Excel and Google SketchUp is required. Familiarity with pre-engineered building systems is a plus.
The Estimator must have the ability to coordinate, interact and communicate professionally with owners, architects, engineers, contractors and sub-contractors. Because estimating is part of the sales process, the Estimator must be comfortable with sales and present a confident and professional appearance to the customer. The Estimator will need to be proficient at writing proposals and provide drawings and renderings of the project to the potential client.
The Estimator will preferably have an associate degree in business or a construction related discipline; or have a minimum of 5 years commercial construction experience that specifically includes supervising or estimating all aspects of a commercial / industrial construction process.
The Estimator’s tasks will include but are not limited to:
- Understanding of building construction including basic knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Familiarity with building drawings, plans, and schedules
- Work closely with Project Managers to “value engineer” project when possible
- Work with architects and engineers to resolve issues and questions on the drawings (RFIs)
- Create and review material take-off
- Assist Project Manager with ordering material if necessary
- Attend pre-bid meetings with architects, subcontractors, and clients
- Be able to climb stairs or ladders if necessary to observe existing building conditions.
- Monitor the project costs to ensure conformance with the estimate.
- Work closely with Office Manager to develop Schedule of Values for billing
- Ensure quality construction practices are used in pricing
- Price change orders and maintain summary of change orders
- Maintain a professional personal appearance
- Attend Butler Manufacturing training courses and maintain familiarization with Butler product.
- Must have computer proficiency and be able to work with Microsoft Excel and Word, Butler Advantage software and Google Sketchup.
- Must work well with other employees. In any small business each employee is required to sometimes “pitch in” when needed when a team member is off sick or is on vacation.
Requirements
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in construction management
- Ability to plan and organize
- Good client management and people skills
- Effective time management and logical decision-making ability
- Capacity to handle pressure of deadlines
- Physical ability to climb ladders, walk roofs, navigate obstacles on construction site, etc.
- Focus on quality
The Estimator position reports to the Owner/President and works in conjunction with Project Managers
