About the role
Overview
The Director of Global Portfolio Strategy will have two key responsibilities: 1) to lead strategic planning initiatives for selected early-stage projects in Shionogi’s Research and Development portfolio, 2) to partner with Global Portfolio colleagues in the implementation and optimization of portfolio analysis processes and effectively communicate project and portfolio information to senior executives in all Shionogi regions.
Responsibilities
Strategic Planning
- Develop commercial assessments for selected pre-Proof of Concept pipeline assets and research programs, including analysis of current treatment approaches, unmet needs, competitive dynamics, and the completion of global demand forecasts and, in some cases, NPVs.
- Facilitate project team discussion and optimization of development strategy for assigned projects by leading appropriate commercial planning, and assuming the lead role in providing commercial input and direction.
- Work closely with Product Development Teams to provide input into key functional plans (e.g., development, regulatory, and manufacturing).
- Manage primary market research initiatives for selected pre-Proof of Concept pipeline assets and research programs.
- Manage secondary data analyses utilizing various national audits, syndicated studies, publications and other sources.
- Build collaborative and consultative working relationships with internal stakeholders (US, EU and Japanese colleagues in Marketing, Clinical Development, Regulatory, Research, and CMC).
Global Portfolio Strategy
- Regularly collect and analyze qualitative and quantitative portfolio data from various functions within the organization.
- Assess portfolio performance and share strategic insights with key decision makers.
- Monitor portfolio performance against established corporate strategic objectives, both short- and long-term
- Proactively identify portfolio gaps and make suggestions for opportunities to improve performance.
- Provide senior management with insights, options, and recommendations based on an integrated view and assessment of the project portfolio.
- Conduct cross-functional workshops for selected high priority projects to develop a shared understanding of Scientific Confidence, Project Risk/Probability of Success, Commercial Environment including competitors, pricing, and sales forecasts/NPVs/eNPV.
- Proactively identify and champion Portfolio best practices, including different ways of analyzing portfolio data, portfolio dashboards, templates, and processes to improve efficiency, decision making, and communication
- Monitor and incorporate changes in the external pharmaceutical industry environment and societal changes to appropriately incorporate insights and risks into portfolio discussions.
Minimum Job Requirements
Qualifications
- 10 years of relevant experience, including 5 years of experience in pharmaceutical Portfolio Management, New Product Planning, Commercial and/or Strategic Planning roles.
- Prior experience in strategy consulting preferred.
- Bachelor’s in Life Sciences, Finance or related field; MBA degree preferred
- Experience in pharmaceutical forecasting; prior experience in portfolio modeling is a plus. Strong understanding of corporate finance principles.
- Experience working in global, matrixed environments.
- Diverse understanding of multiple therapeutic areas is very helpful.

- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite software.
- Project management skills.
- Experience working with portfolio management analytical tools (e.g., Planview) preferred.
Other Requirements
- Must live a commutable distance to our US Corporate Headquarters in Florham Park, NJ. Office presence required 50% per month, at least 2-3 days per week.
