Overview
The Senior Technical Director leads Jhpiego’s broad portfolio of work in HIV, TB and other Infectious Diseases. They align the short and long-term goals of HIV/TB and other Infectious Diseases with those of the organization, ensuring that Jhpiego remains at the forefront of sustaining and achieving global health goals.
The Senior Technical Director provides strategic leadership to ensure technical excellence across the organization, serves as a global thought leader and fosters new strategic partnerships and relationships with donors grow Jhpiego’s portfolio and revenue and strengthen its reputation as a global leader.

Responsibilities
Technical Assistance & Quality Programming
- Ensures that Jhpiego’s programs are of high quality and structured to achieve impact. Ensures that the programs that are assisted are technically sound, evidence-based, and responsive to the priorities and needs of the countries and donors.
- Works collaboratively across other technical implementation units to identify synergistic opportunities and to harmonize and integrate approaches across all clinical, technical and program areas
- Creates and leads multi-dimensional, crosscutting initiatives that improve health programs
- Ensures application of Jhpiego’s quality assurance standards for health systems, ensures high-quality technical approaches, and defines measures of success for Jhpiego’s programs (including gathering, using and presenting appropriate data).
- Provides senior level, high quality technical assistance by combining industry knowledge and best practices with strategic program expertise, guidance and advice for country programs
- Ensures coordinated and quality provision of technical assistance to country programs, including drawing upon global data and trends to identify strategic opportunities, quality issues and trends across the portfolio, and identifies needed shifts in technical approaches and implementation.
- Drives consensus among donor, partner, government or other stakeholder group to ensure successful project outcomes and to maintain Jhpiego’s reputation as a technical leader.
- Develops strong stakeholder networks within project settings and leverages relationships and experience to position the organization for future growth.
Global Technical Strategy Development & Implementation
- Through a variety of approaches, demonstrates, builds and enhances brand-recognition of Jhpiego as a global leader in Infectious Disease including HIV/TB/Malaria and others.
- Drives the vision and development of a cohesive and complementary strategic plan for the next five year of sustaining the HIV gains and leading in innovations. Ensures an integrated approach across the breadth of the program and technical approaches across units.
- Leads a broad team for the conceptualization and development of new innovations and programmatic approaches to accelerate public health impact.
- Sets priorities and makes substantial contributions to departmental and organizational strategic objectives.
Capacity Building
- Identifies and anticipates capacity gaps and designs organizational wide approaches for building capacity among staff and local partners that advance Jhpiego’s competitive advantage.
- Provides leadership for capacity building, coaching and mentoring of staff and local partners. Provides direction for and implements development of capacity building plans based on unit priorities, global trends, updates and quality assurance data.
- Empowers teams to take in new challenges, pursue new ideas and embrace change.
- Keeps abreast of and ensure latest technical guidance is widely disseminated and applied. Conceptualizes and leads implementation of organizational-wide strategies to institutionalize best practices and the most up to date technical and clinical practices.
New Program Development & Donor Relations
- Positions Jhpiego in the near and long term to expand and grow technical portfolios. Cultivates and builds new partnerships with organizations, private enterprises and stakeholders to expand Jhpiego’s capabilities.
- Positions the organization in new markets and secures new commitments and partnerships.
- Develops and grows excellent professional relationships with colleagues, counterparts, and donors worldwide to maximize Jhpiego’s impact.
