The Transportation, Engineering & Operations (TE&O) Bureau within the Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking a motivated Transportation Data & Operations Intern to support transportation operations and safety initiatives that keep Arlington moving. This internship offers hands-on experience supporting day-to-day operational efforts, data-informed decision-making, and process improvements related to transportation systems, traffic safety, and field operations. Working under the mentorship of experienced professionals, the intern will assist with operational coordination, data collection and organization, analysis support, and special projects that contribute to safer, more efficient transportation infrastructure across the County.

Major Job Duties:

  • Supporting transportation operations and safety initiatives through project-based and time-bound assignments that address operational needs and departmental priorities;
  • Assisting with data collection, organization, and basic analysis related to transportation operations, traffic safety, and field activities;
  • Supporting operational coordination efforts, including tracking activities, compiling information, and assisting with workflow improvement initiatives;
  • Assisting with documenting procedures, processes, and operational practices to support consistency and knowledge sharing across teams;
  • Providing support for field-related activities, including coordinating logistics, organizing field data, and assisting with operational reviews;
  • Assisting staff with preparing summaries, reports, presentations, and other materials related to operational performance, safety initiatives, and project updates;
  • Collaborating with staff across Transportation Engineering and Operations (TE&O) and other DES teams to support cross-functional operational projects; and
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support TE&O operations and departmental priorities.

The ideal candidate will have strong organizational and analytical skills, an interest in transportation operations or public infrastructure, and the ability to manage tasks across multiple projects. Experience or coursework involving data analysis, operations, engineering, planning, or public sector work is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications: Recent, 2025 and/or 2026 college graduates earning either a Bachelor’s or a Master’s degree* in the area of consideration prior to the start date of the Cohort Program (Sept. 2026) must have:

  • No professional-level work experience (less than one year) in the internship field; and
  • You may be a currently enrolled student in a Master’s degree program related to the internship, but you must not have significant professional-level work experience in the internship area and must be available to work during designated hours.

Degree Requirements: Computer Science, Data Science, Geography, Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, Civil Engineering, or related discipline.

Desirable Qualifications: Preference may be given to applicants with one or more of the following:

  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or above is preferred and applicants may be asked to provide certified official transcripts; 
  • Coursework or experience in transportation engineering, civil engineering, urban planning, public administration, operations, or a related field;
