Job Summary:

Preforms routine work to assist the Environmental Education Coordinator with conducting programs, tours, and activities for school groups and other visitors. Works under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

Essential Job Functions:

a. Conducts educational and skill-based programs on nature, the environment and wildlife.

b. Provide interpretation on nature, the environment and wildlife to the public through public outreach programs and activities at local schools and hospitals.

c. Provide support to staff for events and programs, care for live animals,

d. May assist to advertise on social media, operate cash register, facilitate admissions and gift shop areas and submit required checklists and reports.

e. Filming, and creating on-line content for our You Tube Channel and Facebook page as a shared responsibility.

f. Provides Visitor Services as needed, including providing customer service, gift shop sales, registering patrons, and conducting opening/closing procedures for our facilities.

Conditions of Employment:


a. Applicant will be subject to a complete background investigation. Incomplete, inaccurate and/or failure to report information will cause the applicant rejection from consideration.

b. Applicant must take and pass a pre-employment drug test administered by the City of Edinburg at the City's expense.

c. Must have a current valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety with a satisfactory driving record.

d. Bilingual English/Spanish Preferred.

Required Education:

Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with a two year Associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

Education Preference:

Bachelor Degree in related field

Educational Substitute:

Additional education and experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience may be substituted for the above requirements.

Required Work Experience:

Requires over one (1) year of experience in natural history interpretation, environmental education, wildlife, and/or environmental science.

Experience Preference:

Three (3) years' experience in natural history interpretation, environmental education, wildlife, and/or environmental science.

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities


a. Requires working knowledge of World Birding Center indoors and outdoors.

b. Provide interpretation on South Texas flora and fauna and the World Birding Center site(s) to visitors (indoors and outdoors); assist with site interpreted field trips, special projects, or other duties as assigned by the Manager.

c. Position requires work on the weekends, and some evenings.

d. Work requires the occasional direction of helpers, assistants, seasonal employees, interns, or temporary employees.

e. Excellent communication skills.

f. Requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

g. Requires regular interaction and exchange and receipt of information to/from the general public, event exhibitors, children, volunteers, supervisors and coworkers.

h. Performs the duty assignment after receiving general instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results.
