Senior Distribution Planning and Analysis Engineer

Leidos Engineering is seeking a (REMOTE) Distribution Planning and Analysis EngineerΒ to join our growing distribution planning team. This position will primarily focus on the execution of distribution planning studies, including feeder capacity assessments, voltage and thermal loading analysis, contingency evaluations, load growth studies, hosting capacity assessments, and distributed energy resource (DER) interconnection impact studies. Additional responsibilities may include arc flash and coordination studies, distribution protection analysis, and self-healing system evaluations as project and client needs dictate.

The successful candidate will develop, maintain, validate, and troubleshoot distribution system models using industry-standard planning and analysis software. Responsibilities include performing model quality assurance, investigating study anomalies, validating utility data, and integrating information from GIS, SCADA, AMI, and other utility systems to support accurate and defensible planning recommendations.

Studies are conducted for Municipal Utilities, Investor-Owned Utilities, and Electric Cooperatives. The position will involve direct client interaction, presentation of technical findings, and support of business development activities. Candidates should possess strong analytical skills and the ability to translate complex study results into practical recommendations for utility clients. In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Lead and support complex distribution planning and system impact studies

  • Develop advanced skills in distribution model creation, validation, and troubleshooting

  • Work with leading utility planning tools such as CYME, Synergi, WindMil, SKM, ETAP, or equivalent platforms

  • Analyze emerging grid challenges associated with DERs, electrification, and load growth

  • Interface directly with utility planners, operations personnel, and engineering leadership

  • Present technical analyses and defend study methodologies and recommendations

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams across Leidos

  • Contribute to strategic utility planning initiatives and grid modernization programs

  • Support proposal development and cultivate trusted advisor relationships with utility clients

The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience performing distribution planning studies and developing technically defensible solutions for utility clients. This includes expertise in feeder load forecasting, power flow analysis, voltage and thermal assessments, contingency evaluations, hosting capacity studies, and distribution model validation and troubleshooting. Candidates should be comfortable identifying model deficiencies, resolving data quality issues, and defending study assumptions and results with utility stakeholders.

Experience with DER interconnection studies, distribution protection and coordination, self-healing network architectures, and utility regulatory compliance initiatives is highly desirable. Familiarity with utility planning policies, state and federal regulatory requirements, and emerging grid modernization programs is preferred. Arc flash assessment experience is considered a plus.

Background Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related engineering discipline required, with 5+ years of experience in distribution system planning, modeling, and analysis.

  • Experience performing distribution studies including power flow, voltage analysis, thermal loading analysis, contingency evaluations, DER interconnection impact studies, Colt/VAR analysis, and time-series simulations.

  • Experience developing, validating, maintaining, and troubleshooting distribution system models and resolving data quality, connectivity, and study result discrepancies.
