Position Summary

The Biomedical Manufacturing Engineer Intern will provide Chemical and Biological Engineering support to Biological (BI) and Chemical Indicator (CI) Operations through line support, continuous improvement, capacity improvements, new product transfers and sustaining engineering.  Improve the overall efficiency of the manufacturing operation while optimizing human work factors, quality control, material flow, etc. by identifying areas for improvement through use of statistics and root cause analysis tools. 

Job Responsibilities

Line Support

  • Provide support in the general oversight and monitoring of machinery.
  • Support with troubleshooting of problems within the manufacturing process.
  • Assist with CAPA (corrective and preventative actions) to resolve production and customer issues.
  • Support formal failure analysis and issue resolution activities to ensure preventative action is accomplished.
  • Support in the creation of written documents, test plans and reports that demonstrate technical rationale for associated decisions(s).
  • Provide hands-on trouble shooting for manufacturing processes.
  • Provide operations department with effective technical support to meet manufacturing quality and quantity objectives.

 

Continuous Improvement

  • Conduct both biological and chemical testing utilizing sterilizers, resistometers and other laboratory equipment.
  • Develop and begin to utilize project management skills to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Conduct time studies
  • Support the team with cost down initiatives in the laboratory and on manufacturing lines.
  • Become familiar with Lean initiatives and support with lean transformations within areas of support.
  • Work on identifying process improvement opportunities and provide input into technical solutions via analysis and hands-on interaction with designated processes, including troubleshooting of manufacturing issues when they occur.
  • Conduct research on root cause for defects.

Capacity Improvement

  • Work toward assessing and monitoring manufacturing capacity capabilities and reconciling with demand.  Gain the ability to propose capacity improvement recommendations accordingly.
  • Directly coordinate efforts associated with BI and CI manufacturing, to include planning, procuring, and qualifying materials, equipment, and processes.

 

New and Sustaining Engineering Product Transfers

  • Work with sustaining Technical Engineering in product changes and/or development to optimize and ensure biological and chemical appropriateness.
  • Evaluate and provide input to product development and sustaining engineering teams to help ensure the introduction of a capable, efficient, and scientific sound operation.
  • Create/evaluate and release process documentation for all new and updated processes.
  • Coordinate efforts associated with planning, procuring, and qualifying materials, equipment, and processes.
  • Train operations personnel on new processes.

 

Other

  • Prototype of assembly/manufacturing concepts and product design changes.
  • Participate in Kaizen events.

Required Experience

  • College level coursework in pursuit of an engineering degree - chemical, manufacturing, or biomedical engineering highly preferred

Preferred Experience

  ↵

  • Prefer candidates with microbiological and chemistry focused coursework (if in chemical or biomedical engineering program)
  • CAD experience is a plus, preferably SolidWorks (if in manufacturing or biomedical engineering programs)
  • Experience in structured problem solving and use of statistical tools preferred.
  • Ability to work hands-on, communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, and a strong desire to learn.

Pay range for this opportunity is $19-24/hr.

 

Minimum pay rates offered will comply with county/city minimums, if higher than range listed.  Pay rates are based on a number of factors, including but not limited to local labor market costs, years of relevant experience, education, professional certifications, foreign language fluency, etc.
