Location:  Based out of Tillamook Oregon. Work to be conducted primarily on the lower Nehalem River and Bay.

 

Anticipated Duration: July 8, 2024 - November 22, 2024 (These are estimated dates. Length of season(s) may be shortened or extended depending on project needs, funding, or factors beyond the project’s control).

 

Job Description: What you will do: You will serve as a crew member for field crews working for the Oregon Coastal Chinook Research and Monitoring Program. Following prescribed electronic creel protocols, you will conduct in-person creel surveys by interviewing anglers to determine harvest and release of salmon and additional fishery information, identifying fish to species, and collecting biological samples primarily from harvested Chinook Salmon. Uses knives and other tools to retrieve parts of fish for aging and/or identification. Surveyors also may request permission from private landowners to conduct surveys on their property.

 

Works daily including weekends and some evenings on docks, and at boat launching ramps in all kinds of weather. The work entails walking up and down boat ramps and narrow docks, regularly climbing into and out of boats, and lifting fish containers or equipment up to 50 pounds with assistance. This position interfaces with members of the public daily. This position requires use of a smart phone application to enter data.

 

Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Position may be physically demanding.

 

Assists with other ODFW projects as needed, including spawning ground surveys. Navigates to sites using written directions, maps, and/or GPS. Identifies fish to species, counts fish in-river, assesses fish activity and condition, and collects biological samples from salmon carcasses encountered. Walks or boats streams to conduct spawning surveys. Uses knives and other tools to retrieve parts of fish for aging and/or identification. Works in adverse weather conditions, uneven surfaces, on boats, and stream banks.

Requirements/Requested Skills: Minimum qualifications are not established for this position; however, we are seeking applicants with the following related skills and experience (e.g., creel surveys, identifying adult fish species (especially salmonids), collecting and accurately recording field data, computer skills, powerboat operation, and customer service) and who possess or are in pursuit of a Fisheries or Wildlife Science degree or related degree in biological/ecological sciences. Preference for interviews may be given to candidates with this background.
