Job Description

Cognosante is seeking a Sr. Linux System Engineer candidate in support of the Dept. of Veterans Affairs (VA) on the Cloud Operations and Migration Services (COMS) program.  The candidate will support the Cloud Service Provider Tools and Services Support (CSP TSS) project. The Linux System/Platform Engineer will work closely with the COMS Technical Project Manager (TPM), COMS Technical Lead (TL) and stakeholders in the VA Enterprise Cloud Solutions Office (ECSO) and COMS Ops, DevSecOps, and Tools teams providing Linux system/platform expertise to the CSP TSS team. The CSP TSS team will produce frameworks, demonstrations, and deliverables to achieve Full Operational Capability (FOC) of AWS/Azure cloud-native tools and services managed by the VA Enterprise Cloud Services Office (ECSO). The ideal candidate must have Linux (preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) engineer experience on either Microsoft Azure or Amazon Web Services (AWS) in an enterprise cloud environment.  

Key Responsibilities

  • Responsible for delivering Agile Stories and Features assigned by the TPM or TL and for participation in Scrums.
  • Contribute to definition and refinement demonstrations, and documentation for support/integration to RHEL VMs/EC2 instances for multiple cloud-native tools and services in Azure/AWS. Coordinate with TPM or TL, stakeholders in ECSO and COMS Ops, DevSecOps, and Tools teams to baseline the deliverables.
  • Support presentations of technical frameworks and provide technical demonstrations and documentation to ECSO senior leadership for their approval.
  • Perform engineering discovery to identify and document current state and gap analysis for support/integration to RHEL VMs/EC2 instances for multiple cloud-native tools and services in Azure/AWS.
  • Perform engineering discovery to define and document future state and action plans to close gaps for support/integration to RHEL VMs/EC2 instances for multiple cloud-native tools and services in Azure/AWS.
  • Perform engineering discovery to define and document a Program Package (often referred to as an Operational Product and Service Packet) for each of the cloud-native tools and services in Azure/AWS. Coordinate with TPM or TL, stakeholders in ECSO and COMS Ops, DevSecOps, and Tools teams to baseline the deliverables.
  • Provide engineering for VA Enterprise Cloud (VAEC) deliverables including:
    • VAEC Tools & Services Operational Tools Methodology
    • VAEC Tools & Services Assessment Report
    • VAEC Tools & Services Inventory

Must Have Qualifications:

  • Minimum of six (6) years setting up, configuring and using AWS cloud operational tools to ensure service level agreements and performance targets are met, and continued compliance with policies, standards and guidelines.
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science, electronics engineering or other engineering or technical discipline OR AWS/Azure CSP Certifications (AWS Professional/Specialty Certification OR Azure Expert/Advanced Certifications.)
  • Current AWS or Azure certification or a recent passing exam (e.g., AWS CCP, AWS CSA associate/professional, AZ-900, AZ-104)
  • Experience with systems administration in Linux (preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) environments.
  • Experience implementing shared cloud and networking products and services and migrating systems and applications; to include managing and operating systems and applications in an enterprise cloud computing environment.
  • Must have thorough knowledge on how to create plans to assure effective management, operations, and maintenance of systems and/or networks, works with teams of Systems Admins is able to prioritize work efforts and identify high risk critical problems and dedicate appropriate resources to mitigation tasks.
  • Must have knowledge of a wide variety of systems and networks to include high volume (transactional) and high availability systems.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Preferred Qualifications (soft skills, preferred, nice to have)

  • Previous Federal Government experience preferably at VA
  • Experience implementing, migrating, managing, and operating systems/applications in an enterprise cloud computing environment. 
  • Experience writing technical documentation, especially in relation to AWS and Azure Cloud architecture. 
  • Linux certification such as Linux+ CompTIA, Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA), or Linux Foundation Certified System Administrator (LFCS)
  • Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) experience
  • Ability to work on a team as well as independently to achieve team goals
