Associate Software Engineer works in an Agile production support team in a multi-technology environment and contributes to the maintenance and enhancement of business applications. Under the guidance of a Sr. Software Engineer or Manager, collaborates with Business Analysts, key stakeholders, and other IT professionals to define technical specifications (based on business requirements) and system interfaces to develop and present business solutions. Software knowledge base will vary based on the applications being supported or enhanced. The production support team is a key facet to the Data Services organization that allows for exposure to multiple areas and teams of the Markel enterprise.
Job Responsibilities
- Production support of key data delivery applications, warehouse, and data lake for the enterprise. This includes day-to-day execution of ETL jobs, data corrections/enhancements, support of reporting applications, monthly releases and monthly data processing.
- Codes, verifies, tests, documents, amends and refactors simple programs/scripts to existing and new systems/programs. Reviews own work to deliver clean code and product.
- Develops and executes unit test scripts under supervision.
- Assists in the diagnoses, troubleshooting, and resolution of issues reported.
- Assists with simple installations, replacing consumable items, maintenance and ensuring correct working of installations.
- Follows department standards and procedures and documents and reports on work done.
- Reviews and coordinates with Sr. Software Developer or manager all systems changes and programs prior to their implementation.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; benchmarking state-of-the-art practices; participating in professional societies.
- Contributes to team’s effort by accomplishing any related tasks as needed.
- Required to work late evening and weekends as needed – typically 10 – 15 hours a month.
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, other related field or military experience preferred
Certification
- Insurance certifications or affiliation with industry group a plus
Work Experience
- 1+ years coding in multiple programming languages such as C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python preferred
- 1+ years of experience with relational databases and SQL – MS SQL Server preferred
- Experience with Microsoft Azure Cloud computing, Serverless tools (Logic Apps and Function Apps) or Databricks is a plus.
Additional Experience
- Experience with ETL processing platforms such as Informatica or Attunity a plus
- Experience with automation tools such as automate or devops tools a plus
- Experience assembling solutions using custom development, off the shelf systems, and 3rd party integrations preferred
