Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center, Indiana's first community mental health center, provides comprehensive care for emotional and behavioral problems, including severe mental illness and substance abuse. The Sandra Eskenazi Mental Health Center offers both inpatient and outpatient services, including several outreach centers as well as clinic- and community-based services.

Job Role Summary

The PRN Assessment and Intervention Center (AIC) Staff Nurse II performs nursing services as a health team member in the AIC. This position independently functions as a practitioner and provides total care process, demonstrating problem-solving decision-making and critical-thinking skills. This position works collaboratively with physicians and other health professionals to implement treatments, dispense medications for withdrawal management, and give medication and injections in accordance with prescribed orders, and protocols for the AIC.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

•    Proactively contributes to Eskenazi's mission: Advocate, Care, Teach and Serve with special emphasis on the vulnerable population of Marion County. Models Eskenazi values.
•    Endorses and models a strengths based, community centered model of care.
•    Performs nursing services as a health team member in the AIC.
•    Works under the authority of protocols established by the Assessment and Intervention Center Medical Director.
•    Independently functions as a practitioner and provides total care process, demonstrating problem-solving decision-making and critical-thinking skills
•    Provides health education and client counseling to control and prevent disease and promote optimum health and wellbeing of clients.
•    Responds to health needs of clients when seen in the AIC by identifying and assessing health care requirement of problems expressed.
•    Assists other healthcare team members in AIC.
•    Develops and implements nursing care plans based upon responses of the client, refers clients to appropriate agencies/organizations to promote continuity of care for clients.
•    Works collaboratively with physicians and other health professionals to implement treatments, dispense medications, and give medication and injections in accordance with prescribed orders, and protocols for the AIC.
•    Documents routine nursing activities and maintains records and prepares electronic documentation.
•    Work as a member of a health team to counsel clients in health education, medication and treatment instructions
•    Attend any necessary meetings and/or training sessions to share information regarding clients, policies/procedures, peer review, resource material, and develop evaluation tool for use in internal audit procedures.
•    Interviews clients and records health history, prepares, maintains and uses records for reports for direct client services.
•    Alters activities/behaviors to reflect/ensure adequate care appropriate to the age of clients served within the AIC.
•    Attends required department meetings
 

Job Requirements

•    Licenses/Certification required: Current Indiana License as Registered Nurse
•    Minimum of 1 year of experience working in behavioral health or substance use treatment settings
•    Current CPR and ACLS certifications
•    Graduation from an accredited professional school/college of nursing. Six months to one year of supervised broad clinical experience (e.g. medical/surgical, geriatric, and psychiatric)
 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

•    Knowledge
o    Knowledge of disease processes and their treatment/prevention, basic science, current clinical protocol/nursing techniques, medication/drugs and their use/side effects, community resources' referrals, culture attitudes/custom appropriate departmental procedures and local/State/Federal laws/regulations.
•    Skills
o    Skills in nursing, health assessment, health teaching/coaching
o    Effective interpersonal communications.
o    Skill to provide care appropriate to the age of clients served.
•    Abilities
o    Ability to use appropriate communication skills.
o    Ability to use age appropriate cognitive abilities, skills, techniques and communications are detailed in the department/area/unit job specific/age specific competencies.
