Maine Correctional Center is seeking skilled and qualified applicants for the position of Plant Maintenance Engineer I at our modern, high-tech, state-of-the-art medium/minimum-security facility in Windham, ME. The successful applicant will play a critical role in maintaining essential systems within a correctional setting.
As a Plant Maintenance Engineer I, you will perform a variety of structural and craft work, including the operation, maintenance, and repair of complex systems such as high-pressure steam plants, boilers, water, heating, sewage, and electrical systems, and install and maintain pumps, as well as repair turbines. This role also involves overseeing and instructing resident crews in their assigned tasks, while ensuring appropriate behavior and safety at all times. In addition to your technical duties, you will be responsible for monitoring and guiding MCC residents as they work on various maintenance projects.
Applicants must be willing to participate in stand-by rotation and work holidays and snow days, when necessary. Work is performed under limited supervision.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Operation of a high-pressure steam generating plant
- Maintenance and repair of boilers, water, heating, sewage, and electrical systems
- Installation and maintenance of pumps
- Repair of turbines at a correctional facility
- Monitor and direct the operation and maintenance of a central heating plant, or a number of low-pressure plants used in heating individual buildings
- Inspect and oversee the operation and maintenance of heating plants, including electrical power generating equipment operated by the facility
- Perform the more skilled and complex maintenance jobs
- Lay out and inspect the work of skilled tradesmen, maintenance workers, and other workers or residents in order to ensure work is accomplished according to established standards.
- Monitor and control resident behavior in order to accomplish assigned tasks and maintain institutional security
- Supervise and instruct residents working on maintenance projects in order to ensure work is accomplished correctly and safely.
- Keep related records and prepare reports to document activities and provide information for administrative review and planning purposes
- Requisition supplies and materials needed in the operation and maintenance of the plant and mechanical department
- Monitor and direct the operation, maintenance, and testing of a sewerage treatment plant
DESIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices, and techniques of heating plant operations and maintenance.
- Occupational hazards and safety precautions of mechanical and building trades and in the operation of steam/electric power plants.
- Mechanical and building trades.
- Supervisory practices.
Ability to:
- Use of a variety of power and hand tools.
- Read plans and work from sketches and specifications.
- Plan, assign, and direct the work of journeymen, semi-skilled and unskilled workers, and residents.
- Keep records and make reports.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Four (4) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of steam generating plants
and maintenance and repair of water, heating, and electrical systems in a large commercial or public plant.
LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of an engineer's license of the class required by the State of Maine for the equipment to be operated.
