Lead Engineer, Atlas Search Query

Join the Atlas Search Query team to design and develop the next generation of Search query architecture, optimization, and execution. 

Atlas Search is a growing cloud service that allows users to execute complex search queries using the MongoDB Query Language. Our users are free to focus on relevance and data retrieval instead of the machinery needed to search data at scale. 

Our team is building a cloud-based distributed system responsible for the core components of search including data ingestion, performance, query language, query execution, and aggregation. Our product is being adopted quickly and there are many interesting projects and opportunities to make an impact.

We are looking to speak to candidates who are based in San Francisco for our hybrid working model.

Ideally you will be:

• 2+ years of experience managing and mentoring an engineering team
• 7+ years of experience in data management systems or backend engineering
• Proficient in modern programming languages and techniques
• Eager to shape the technological direction of a complex system and have the ability to lead this initiative through collaboration with others
• Advantage to candidates experienced with designing distributed systems and high volume query engines, such as a database or search system

You would get to:

• Manage and assemble a team of talented software engineers
• Build and design our integrated search platform, written in Java
• Lead complex projects spanning search services and MongoDB ecosystem 
• Oversee the development process of new features, from identification to implementation. This includes assisting in design, testing, and support to enhance query performance, robustness, diagnostics, and operability
• Perform code reviews and make recommendations on how to improve our software development processes
• Ensure that the team is running smoothly by helping to eliminate technical barriers, and coordinating with other teams regarding dependencies
• Contribute to planning projects and hiring plans

Success Measures:

• In 1 month, you will be learning -  becoming familiar with our teams, systems and architecture
• In 3 months, you'll start hiring senior engineers and leading impactful projects in Atlas Search’s query system
• By 6 months, you'll be driving innovative initiatives and fostering a culture of continuous improvement within the team, demonstrating the leadership and forward-thinking expected in this role
