Associate, German & EU Policy (Berlin-based)

Global Counsel is seeking an Associate to join its Berlin team. The team helps investors, multinational firms and start-ups across various sectors to overcome policy challenges and maximise opportunity. These include tech, mobility, health and retail.

The successful candidate will show high interest in the interplay between federal, state and European actors relevant for policymaking in Germany and as such, have existing knowledge about how Germany’s political system operates. Specific experience in either the Bundestag, a ministry, an industry association or a Germany-focused political consultancy would be an asset, but neither are essential.

Role and responsibilities:

• Support the monitoring and analysis of key policy announcements and regulatory trends in Germany.
• Support the delivery of public affairs strategies through carrying out stakeholder mapping and providing informed insight on Germany’s political landscape.
• Work with colleagues to develop and deliver clients' strategies as they seek to shape or comply with new legislation and/or build their political brand.
• Provide day-to-day contact for clients, building positive client relationships and delivering actions and projects to meet clients' needs and deadlines.
• Support the planning and execution of client events and content designed to enhance our clients’ engagement in policy debates and discussions.
• Support business development by identifying potential clients, researching their interests, and producing tailored outreach.
• Act as an active ambassador for Global Counsel at relevant industry and policy events, and invest in developing the skills, expertise and reputation of yourself and others.

Skills and profile:

• Strong knowledge of the policymaking architecture in Germany and the interplay of the Bundestag, Bundesrat, the Federal Government and EU institutions.
• A university degree in political science, social sciences, public administration, economics or law. Internships or experience in political organisations, consulting, or industry associations are a plus.
• The ability to make inferences and draw conclusions about how politics and regulations affect businesses and understand how that knowledge may be applied to Global Counsel’s business development.
• Clear, objective and engaging written communication, including the ability to write on sensitive and technical subjects, often synthesising complex material.
• The ability to take the initiative on work, and to work well independently and as part of a team.
• Self-awareness and a strong commitment to professional and personal development.
• Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills in English and German (at least C1-level). Any other language skills are an advantage, but non-essential.
