Northrop Grumman Space Systems—Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer to join our team of qualified and diverse individuals. This position, located in Huntsville, AL, plays a crucial role in supporting the U.S. President, Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

Relocation Assistance is not available for this position, and this role is on-site with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program serves as the integrating element of the Missile Defense System. It is an essential operational system that enables the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels to systematically plan ballistic missile defense operations, monitor the progression of the battle, and dynamically manage designated networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.

C2BMC supports a layered missile defense capability that allows for an optimized response to threats of all ranges at every phase of flight. C2BMC acts as a force multiplier, globally and regionally networking, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations to enhance performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a crucial component of all system ground and flight tests, which verify and exercise the current and future capabilities of the missile defense system.

This position is for a Principal Software Engineer on the C2BMC program. The candidate will be responsible for software development in Java for one of the Regional Applications teams in Huntsville (Battle Management, System-Arch, or Track Server). With minimal direction, they will provide specialized expertise across multiple systems and software disciplines, along with general knowledge of related fields, application implications, and customer areas.

Essential Functions:

  • Responsible for conducting thorough analysis and providing technical support for systems software products, which includes resolving complex issues, design, development, testing, operational integration, and user assistance
  • Maintains currency, debugs, and configures the associated software products
  • Collaborates with specifications to design or alter operating system applications
  • Assists with the design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs
  • Collaborate with other system support groups to resolve issues, establish standards, and enhance the overall efficiency of the operating system
  • Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for automating operations
  • Works on most aspects of programming software applications and may need minor instruction and guidance in other areas
  • Command and control system application development

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline preferred from an accredited university and 5 years of related experience or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of experience, or a PhD and 1 year of experience, or 9 years of related experience in lieu of a degree may be considered.
  • Applicants must possess a current, active in-scope DoD-issued Secret security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% to support business needs
