Job Description Summary

MUSC Children’s Health After Hours Care Mt. Pleasant is a pediatric outpatient clinic that falls under the Shawn Jenkin’s Children’s Hospital at MUSC. During the day, we host a variety of pediatric subspecialists such as pediatric pulmonary, GI, endocrinology, neurology, cardiology only to name a few. In addition to that, we provide a walk-in After Hours Care, which is a direct extension of our pediatric emergency department to serve our community during the hours when most pediatricians are closed.

This RN position is to support multiple pediatric specialty providers with the message management in EPIC.

Our specialty clinics operate M-F 8 am – 4:30 pm
Our After Hours care operates M-F 3 pm – 10 pm, 12 pm – 7 pm on weekends and holidays.

Job Description

For this role, the hours will be Monday- Friday 8-430.

Job Summary/PurposeThe In-basket registered nurse will report to the clinic manager.  Under general supervision, the In-basket clinical coordinator will be the first line of contact. This team fields all requests from physicians and patients for multiple pediatric specialty clinics. Items such as patient advise request, result notes, refill encounters, prior authorizations, refill errors, and all other items. The RM working the team pool, allows them to handle these items these in baskets to the top level of their licensure.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains and reviews patient records, charts, and other pertinent information, communicating appropriately. Document test and exam results. Communicates care plan to the patient, including formal development of patient education materials as necessary.

  • Responds to and triages phone calls. Call in orders appropriately as ordered by a physician. Instructs patient, as requested by the physician, regarding treatment and medication.

  • Confers with physicians regarding need, urgency, and appropriateness of messages in the in-basket. Assesses and reviews physician orders to assist with refills, patient calls, prior authorizations, and other duties as assigned.

  • Documents all patient care activities in the electronic medical record including disposition of patient telephone calls, medication list, etc. Generates ancillary requests and updates medicines as needed in EMR (electronic medical record).

  • Participates in performance improvement /research activities designed to improve patient care and/or organizational processes.

  • May be asked to assist with front and clinical areas in the absence of other staff.

RN II Job Summary/Purpose: Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.
 

RN II Minimum Training and Education:  Bachelor of Nursing degree preferred. RN staff hired on or after July 1, 2013 with an Associate or Diploma degree in nursing are required to be enrolled in an accredited BSN program within two years and successfully obtain a BSN degree within four years of the RN hire or reclassification date. Refer to policy A141 for more details. A minimum of one year of work experience as a registered nurse required.

RN II Required Licensure, Certifications, Registrations:  Licensure as a registered nurse by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or a compact state. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required, either a certification from an American Heart Association (AHA) BLS for Healthcare Providers (or AHA recognized equivalent) or an American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer and Healthcare Provider.
