POSITION TITLE:  Research Assistant I
 

POSITION SUMMARY:

Working under minimal supervision, the incumbent will independently and collaboratively conduct research and perform a variety of standard laboratory procedures for projects. This includes analyzing data, interpreting results, and investigating, troubleshooting, and modifying methods and procedures as necessary. The role may involve assisting in experiment design, routine equipment maintenance, and providing guidance/training to other department personnel. Additional related duties and responsibilities will be assigned as required.

Specifically, this position will focus on the isolation of sporozoites and the analysis of protein fractions by ELISA.

RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Work under general supervision, with assistance provided for unusual problems and review for the application of sound professional judgment. 
  • Independently conduct a variety of standard laboratory techniques and procedures, with some ability to use judgment to adapt standard methods when necessary.
  • Receive instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and potential solutions.
  • Provide interpretation and initial analyses of results.
  • Have limited ability to troubleshoot and modify procedures.
  • Assist in designing experiments to complete a segment of the overall research plan.
  • This position will involve manual pipetting and centrifugation of malaria parasites and the fractionation of samples for analysis.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline or an equivalent combination of education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been attained.
  • Requires 1-3 years experience. Candidates possessing a Master’s degree, 0-2 years experience required.

COMPENSATION: The expected hiring range for this position is $20.07 to $25.06 per hour, commensurate with experience. Consideration will be given to experience that exceeds the listed requirements.
