SUMMARY
This paid internship offers a valuable opportunity for a motivated student to gain practical experience in government auditing at the municipal level. The intern will support the Internal Audit team in evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of internal controls, and compliance with established policies. This role offers hands-on experience and exposure to the essential principles of accountability and transparency within city government.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in audit planning and execution: Support senior auditors in conducting all phases of the audit process, including preliminary surveys and risk assessments, fieldwork, and documentation.
- Conduct research and analysis: Research relevant city ordinances, policies, and state statutes to ensure compliance. Help analyze financial records, reports, and other documentation for accuracy and compliance.
- Document and summarize findings: Prepare clear and concise work papers to document audit procedures and findings, ensuring compliance with professional standards.
- Support special projects: Assist with special projects, investigations, and data analysis as needed to address issues of fraud, waste, and abuse within city operations.
- Participate in meetings: Attend and contribute to meetings, including entrance and exit conferences, to present findings and observations.
- Communicate with staff: Engage with city employees across various departments to gather information and clarify processes.
Preferred Qualifications
- Candidates should be currently enrolled in or have recently graduated from a bachelor’s or master’s program in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, Data Science, or a related discipline.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
- Ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and demonstrate a high degree of attention to detail.
- Demonstrated interest in public service and city government operations.
- Must be able to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information discreetly.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.
Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes, such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.
Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
