Director, Practice Guidance and Health Equity

JOB SUMMARY:

The Director, Practice Guidance (PG) and Health Equity (HE) is accountable for the overall functioning of the practice guidance and health equity arms of the Centers for Research, Practice, and Innovation (CRPI) as well as serving as a subject matter expert in the field of infection prevention, control, and epidemiology.

 The Director, Practice Guidance and Health Equity is responsible for providing accurate and complete guidance regarding infection prevention practice to APIC members and staff. The Director will assess new and existing evidence as well as current IPC landscape and climate to determine when and where additional practice guidance support is needed. The Director will also work to build organizational knowledge regarding the impact and determinants of health equity within the field of Infection Prevention, with a longer-term goal of building resources to aid IPs in understanding and improving health equity.

The Director, Practice Guidance and Health Equity will also serve as an infection prevention, control, and epidemiology subject matter expert for the entirety of the CRPI, providing consultation and interpretation when needed.

The Director, Practice Guidance and Health Equity will interact closely with multiple categories of external stakeholders, including other infection preventionists, vendor partners, and other association partners. This position will also interact routinely with other APIC staff members in the business development, policy, and education departments. The director will provide direct support for both the Practice Guidance and Health Equity Committees, ensuring appropriate prioritization and quality of work. The director will be responsible at times for overseeing contracted services and employees, including but not limited to infection preventionists and project managers.

The Director, Practice Guidance and Health Equity must be adept at interpretating evidence-based practice and possess excellent writing, editing and oral communication skills. The director must be organized, a problem solver, self-directed, and demonstrate leadership and initiative, while at the same time being a committed team player. The position requires political savvy, a keen understanding of trending infection prevention issues, and strong leadership and project management skills.

 The ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations, along with strong written and verbal communication, administrative, and organizational skills, and the ability to maintain a realistic balance among multiple priorities is also key to success in this role. The Director, Practice Guidance and Health Equity must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities. This position supports the goals and mission of APIC.

Internal IPC and Epidemiology Subject Matter Expert (SME)

• Serves as SME for PG and HE arms of CRPI
• Identifies, scopes, prioritizes, sequences, and executes upon work relevant to practice guidance and health equity
• Develops and serves infection prevention professionals by interpreting, summarizing, and sharing guidance on key infection prevention practice issues
• Leads investigation on the impact of health equity within the field of infection prevention and shares relevant findings and tools
• Represents CRPI and APIC as a liaison to key associations and organizations
• Partners with Research Director to identify opportunities for new research in areas where existing evidence is lacking

Practice Guidance and Health Equity Committee Facilitator

• Facilitates practice guidance and health equity committees
• Maintains committee membership, charters, objectives and ensure appropriate direction and progress
• Reviews and validates committee work products prior to release and determines best mechanisms for sharing
• Liaisons between committees and other APIC departments and resources
• Conducts continuous quality improvement exercises to ensure efficiency and effectiveness
