Job Description

The Senior Manager, Microbiology is responsible for managing the operations and departmental activities of the Microbiology team. You will be highly knowledgeable and experienced in the development and execution of all methods used for Microbiology. The Senior Manager will also have experience in designing and managing analytical plans to advance Microbiology throughout the development process. The Senior Manager will be responsible for the seamless and flawless execution of projects in collaboration with technical, operational, and project managers. This role is expected to be both client and internal-facing. The ability to multi-task, perform under deadlines, and deliver the highest quality work is absolutely key to success in this position.

Job Functions

  • Manage and oversee the departmental activities in Microbiology including overseeing team supervisors to ensure all areas related to testing such as scheduling, preparedness for testing, the conduct of testing activities, and reporting are done efficiently and effectively
  • Serve as a technical expert in the areas of Microbiology, providing advice and leadership as needed to each department
  • Develop, implement, and maintain systems to ensure that SGS clients receive top-notch customer service from the Microbiology department
  • Ensure that all client requests for Microbiology information or quotes (or information regarding any of SGS's other services) are met in a timely and effective manner
  • Devise, conduct and/or manage all studies related to Microbiology
  • Cultivate long-term relationships with clients based on a combination of technical expertise, scientific knowledge, and professional integrity
  • Responsible for performance and/or management of routine large molecule and microbiological testing requested by clients, as well as specific advanced or specialized studies requested by clients
  • Maintain thorough knowledge and understanding of all SOPs pertaining to the laboratory
  • Maintain thorough knowledge and understanding of GMP/GLP and ISO requirements as these pertain to work performed in the laboratory
  • Participate in departmental and/or company-wide projects designed to improve the nature of SGS client services
  • Ensure that all reasonable requests from the General Manager of SGS Life Science Services pertaining to the conduct of a given test or group of tests are met in a timely and effective manner
  • Ensure that all Analysts working in the Microbiology Services laboratory have the resources required to complete their studies successfully
  • Notify the corporate QA Department whenever regulatory affairs issues pertaining to testing need to be addressed
  • Notify Project Coordinators of any special requests or general concerns regarding sample log-in, reporting, and billing activities
  • Play a lead role in Departmental or company-wide projects designed to improve the internal efficiency and overall quality of work performed at the laboratory
  • Play a lead role in creating and maintaining a positive atmosphere of teamwork throughout the laboratory

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biology, or related sciences
  • 10+ years of experience in a regulated, commercial Microbiology lab environment
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience 
  • OR equivalent combination of education and experience
